I am working with a store trying to sell a EGL USA Round Brillant 1 CT Diamond for 6500 with the "possibility" of bringing it down to 6300. Is this overpriced? I found a similarly spec'ed stone on Union Diamond for about 1000 less. I have seen the stone in person and it is quite lovely and sparkly. I looked at it under 30x magnification and saw very few pin points.

I am not so much concerned about the quality of the stone as it does look great in person but I am concerned about whether or not this is a fair price. Please advise!

Here are the specs on the EGL USA Cert:

Weight: 1.0 CT
Color: H
Clarity: VS2
Measurements: 6.37x6.3x3.91
Depth: 61.7%
Table: 59%
Crown: 13.9%
Pavilion: 42.6%
Crown Angle: 34.2
Pavilion Angle: 40.6
Girdle: Medium to Very Thick, Facted
Polish: VG
Symmetry: Good
Fluor: None
Culet: None

If you are looking for a very good cheap 1ct. I would choose this stone:
http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-search?track=head#diamonds_pid=LD02327536

This stone is 6.5mm compared to 6.3 for the EGL stone which is nice. The EGL stone has a partial very thick girdle and that would knock it out of contention. Not to mention that EGL stones are often a couple of color grades lower than they say. Stick with GIA Excellent cut and you'll do better. You might check out James Allen as sometimes they have better prices than BN.

I have a look at James Allen as the first source every time as it is my favourite source :-) But this stone at bluenile is currently I guess the best price/quality. Really nice choice, not only the cut overall is excellent the spread is GREAT too, optimal clarity/colour, great HCA score (1.4) and the price is pretty cheap. Although I am not a big fan of bluenile I really like this particular stone.

Thanks guys. I think I am going to pass on the stone from the store it just seems overpriced.

Here's a question:

If the numbers on EGL certs check out on the HCA and the color is rated H or better and clarity VS2 or better do you think that its still a subpar stone because its not GIA certified?

HCA is a rejection tool and means the stone is worth further evaluation; it does not mean the stone will be a good performer. With EGL you do not know what you are purchasing so in that regard I would say it is a sub par stone.

I think you can really trust Blue Nile. I've had nothing but good experiences with them. I only bought one expensive item, a pair of .70tcw Signature diamond studs, plus quite a few smaller-ticket items ranging from $40-$250. So I am not a big spender by their standards, yet they put me on this special plan where anything I order comes free overnight FedEx. I ordered a $40 silver bracelet and asked for it to be sized. Even so, it was with me 16 hours after ordering it....from 3,000 miles away. I have dealt with James Allen, Whiteflash and Brian Gavin Diamonds and none have come close to my experiences with Blue Nile, which is why they're my fallback and failsafe, and I feel they are extremely trustworthy.

My Signature studs have so much fire it's ridiculous. I know you probably want a full carat, but just so you know all the options, you could go down a little in size and get a blue Nile Signature cut, which in my experience are just outstanding, shooting fire in all lights. They tend to score around 1 or less on the HCA.
