After slaving over which diamond to buy for an engagment ring, I''ve finally picked this one from Blue Nile. What do you think?

.57 Round Blue Nile Signature Cut
H&A
Color: D
Clarity: VVS2
Depth: 61.2%
Table: 57%
Symmetry: Excellent
Polish: Excellent
Girdle: medium to slightly thick
Cutlet: None
Fluorescence: None
5.33 x 5.35 x 3.27mm

The first diamond I looked at had medium blue fluorescence. I''ve read differing opinions on the web about this. Since I''m interested in a colorless diamond I didn''t want to take a chance on it changing in sunlight. I was able to see a picture of this stone on the GIA report (it''s marked H&A, but the pavillion doesn''t show hearts. It has a neat almost butterfly reflection from the bottom.)

price: $3422

Please let me know what you think. I wouldn''t mind buying a diamond with fluor, but it seemed risky over the internet. BN had an IF, D .50 carat listed for $5200, but it was out of my poor college student price range.

This is really funny because we just had a guy on here looking at a half carat D IF stone. We eventually talked him into going with a larger stone and dropping either color or clarity. I think he was moving more toward a D VS1 closer to .75-1.0 cts.

Is there any particular reason you are looking at D VVS? You usually cannot see inclusions in a VS1 with a 10x loupe, so there is really no reason to pay for VVS unless she absolutely does not want larger than a half carat. And with ideal cut stones, you can definitely go to F or even G color and see a very bright white stone!

I found that thread so you can read it:

Here were alternative stones that I listed for him to consider:

Here are some nice F-G VS stones in the .75-.80 range (around $4000):

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/4149/ .77 F VS1

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/3892/ .81 G VS2

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/4152/ .76 F VS1
You''ve got to think about what DS is telling u. I vote for the .81 G VS2

Ditto! When you first look at diamonds if you are not used to seeing them, 0.5ct looks like a fair size, but they shrink I tell you, SHRINK!!

VVS in overkill, you could easily drop to the VS range and save $$ - this coming from a totally freak that insisted on a D colour stone, but I could see that (well, the difference between and E and F, and I just wanted it)

Another point, you may want to go with a vendor like GOG or WF that have upgrade policies, especially if you are thinking of sticking to a smaller range and are not totally sure your partner will be happy with it.

Good luck!

I had the same fears until I got a diamond with blue fluorescence, and my fears are gone. In bright sunlight there is a hint of blue, but truth be told, the thing sparkles so much that the blue is hard to discriminate. It really does add a nice touch to the diamond, in my opinion anyway.
From what I understand, the real “danger” of blue fluro is that you can get a diamond that looks like a police light or a diamond that is cloudy/milky. If you are working with a good dealer (Wink, GOG) just ask them how it is affecting the diamond.
I’m no expert, but it seems to me that people tend to pass over diamonds with fluro and end up paying more for a lesser diamond. Food for thought.
