I recently purchased a diamond graded by EGL.
This is the report that was given to me. When I asked for the original EGL report as well I was told that this is the EGL grading report...

I'm confused because I thought the Gemex and Grading reports were two different things. One as a measure of diamond performance and the other showing the diamond specifics, inclusions plot and facet pattern.

The Gemex states that the grading information comes from the EGL report. This leads me to believe there should also be two reports given to me, but the vendor says that this is the report that EGL supplies for them.
This is from star129.com:
"Every Star 129 diamond comes with a traditional diamond grading certificate from GIA or EGL, as well as a Gemex Three Dimensional Light Performance Report that shows how well each diamond performs for light. "

Can anyone clear this up before I push the issue with the vendor?
I've attached what I have.

Thanks in advance!

No that is NOT the report. There IS an EGL report. I have owned multiple Star129s and there is an EGL, they just have to obtain it OR you can order it from EGL. Who did you purchase this from?

In all honesty, I don't feel that I should have to go through the trouble of ordering it myself. I purchased a stone that was represented to me as having an EGL report. I should get that report with my purchase.
And I also wouldn't have as much of an issue if I was told 'yes there is a report but we don't have it you have to obtain it' from the beginning instead of 'no that is the report'.
I didn't want to dispute too much with the vendor as I was starting to doubt myself and what I thought I knew.
I purchased it from a well loved Pricescope vendor. Other than this slight issue everything else has been fine and I planned to upgrade my stone with them in the future. I chose this vendor as a long term vendor so I'd like to resolve this.
What should I do?

Since I am also a repeat customer of this same vendor, I would say that you should ask that they contact EGL on your behalf and get a copy of it sent to you. BUT if my memory serves, EGL would not deal with the jeweler for me because the jeweler was not the stone's owner, *I* was, and EGL needed ME to call about it which is why I suggested it. But it's been about 2 years since I bought this stone, so they might allow the jeweler to intervene now. They would not over the prior 5 years from when I bought this one though.

It could also be that Star129 never got a copy of the report, just the grade for resale of the stone OR never sent it on to the vendor because another vendor may have had it in their store and the diamond got recalled back for your vendor and they never sent the paperwork with it, so that may be why there isn't one in their hands. I do agree that telling you there isn't one and that the GEMEX was the report was the wrong way to handle it, because I have owned several and all of them had an EGL (well one or two were GIA, but all had reports).

I did have to fight with the original jeweler we bought our first one from to get it though, they'd lost it and kept lying about the fact that they'd mailed it and reordered it for me. When I spoke to EGL, they said that the jeweler has it, and should have given that to me the same day we purchased. I said that they'd claimed they had sent it to me and that it was lost, even though we would've picked it up since they were right by my office, and that they had reordered it. EGL said there was never a reorder so I just reordered one myself and EGL sent me a new copy for like $20 and it was a NICE laminated copy. It is in my binder with all my paperwork.

Thanks for your advice Ame. I'm glad you saw this topic and I had hoped you would when I decided to post it.
I did suggest to the vendor that perhaps this stone did not come with a report but they said yes it did, and that (since I asked) they called Star129 the company told them the Gemex was the report from the EGL.
I'll ask if maybe the vendor can try to obtain the report for me and if not I'll contact EGL myself.
I hope they don't see me as a problematic customer now! :( I've been very polite and understanding because as I said earlier I thought I knew what I was talking about but I wasn't *sure*

One more question that might be slightly off topic: How important is it to have that EGL grading report for my appraisal? I'm having the setting made by another company that's never heard of Star129. I hope I am able to get the EGL report by the time the setting is done. 8)

If you printed out the link above that verified your stone matched the report, that would be sufficient for the appraisal. But having the real one allows you to make the official copy for your insurance agent to have on file. I provided copies of my actual report, all photos, all the GOG information and the Gemex report that wasn't already in the packet Jon provided with the stone. My agent probably thought I was nuts.

I don't think you are problematic at all, unless you are taking some kind of tone with them or something. You just want your expectations met, and other than this one thing it sounds that they were. I think it's interesting that Star said that the GEMEX was the same thing, because that's not the same thing at all, I have both and to my knowledge they provided both. They do take info from the report, but why they didn't have the real report is beyond me unless they didn't pay for a copy or something. I hope that they can get a copy of it for you, it isn't hard to get one from EGL though.

As far as the setter not knowing your stone...Im very, VERY familiar with that. Not a lot of folks know anything about this cut, I've been wearing one since I learned of them like 8 years ago. I was SO EXCITED when Jon was able to get them to sell. I wish they would still cut stones of higher clarity and smaller size though like they used to. Id love a three stone version but I'd want 1/3ct per side I think.

I am glad I could help. I am, to my knowledge, the only other person on here with one :) Im finally not alone!

No no, no tone, like I said I plan to be a repeat customer so I just want things to go smoothly. :)
When I first started considering this type of cut I was advised to try to see one in person as I've heard that the look is not for everyone. So I drove like an hour to the only jeweler near SF that carried them.
I saw a three stone version that I fell in LOVE with!! It was simple, classic and beautiful. The center was 1.5ct and the sides were .5 cts each. I loved the proportions! They also had a tennis bracelet and a few other .5ct engagement rings as well as 2cttw studs. I liked how the studs looked on me, but not in the budget right now and I'm not sure about that size for everyday wear for me (I wish!)
I think the price for the three stone was around 25k. ::sigh:: someday!

I asked GOG about 1/3ct stones for .6cttw studs and I think they said the studs are already made up into three prong martinis and are
$1575 for h/i si3-i1. I agree it is too bad if they don't have them in higher clarity.

I'm glad you have a Star129 also :D
I loved your pictures and they are part of the reason I began looking at this cut!

I am glad to see someone else get one! I was the lone ranger for a LONNNNG time on here. I had never seen anyone actually get one, some considered, but I didn't see anyone buy one. I did talk a guy trhough the purchase of one from another forum I go through and was so psyched that his fiance loved it. Its is firey and noticeable from across a room, but up close has such a neat pattern. They ARE a look not everyone loves, but I seem to really go towards the modified cuts like this. I love the Octavia too as well as Crisscuts. The way they shoot fire is so cool, and they look so much bigger than they are because of edge-to-edge whiteness. I cannot wait to see yours on your hand :) Do you have the link to the stone? Id love to see it's patterning!

To go off topic, I recommended GOG and a couple of other well respected PS vendors to a coworker who wanted to put together an ering. His now fiancée chose a Star 129 from GOG as well, so I guess you can count her in the club. From all accounts she adores it, but my coworker can't pry it off her finger long enough to being to work so I can have a looky loo! ;))

Hi Sweet,

Been busy at the store but just caught this thread. Sorry I didn't catch this sooner. You are NO PROBLEM whatsoever and I had overheard a member of my staff talking about this recently. What Ame has told you is 110% correct. There should very well be a separate lab Report along with the Gemex that accompanies your diamond. If there is any issue getting this please call and ask for me in the store personally (I'll be there from 12-4pm tomorrow then back again on Tuesday) and I'll see to it that you are served if it hasn't been resolved already. Thank you kindly for your patience and patronage and we will always go the extra mile to ensure everything is proper and in order.

Kindest regards,
Jonathan

YAY! So glad Jon chimed in on this. :wavey: I've never not gotten a report with any of mine. I am equally glad to see that JustGinger's friend also wears one, and chose it herself!!! YAY the STAR129CLUB!!!

I also hope that the next time I am in NYC that I am going out to LI to pick out side stones or an upgrade. :naughty:

Thanks so much Jon! I would just hate to be a bother and I really do love working with your team!
I'll go ahead and touch base via email on Tuesday with the person I've been working with at your store.
I appreciate your time and effort to reach out to me and make sure this is taken care of.
:))

Yes! I love the Crisscuts too! I've seen then at Shane Co. and Shreve & Co. but only in the emerald cut version.
I'm hoping to get an Octavia sometime in the future too. I'd a ring like Kenny's tension set Octavia for my Hubby.

Here's the link to my stone and I have some pics of it on my hand in the temp ring clip thingy. I'll see if I can post them.
It took me forever to pick a setting. Well it kinda felt like forever... so now that I chose one I'm impatient to have it back and actually wear it!

I'll open a thread in SMTB so I can post pics of my stone and the different settings it tried on ;)

Oh Ame!
Here's something you might find interesting;
I came across some Fire Polished diamonds at a local jewelers.
Sparkle like crazy! It had a similar look to Star129, but much more fire/dispersion. Kinda looks like those holographic stickers or the back of a CD.
I like the look but I wouldn't trade my Star129 for it. I would def get one as an addition diamond though! :naughty:
Even though it was a smaller diamond than mine you never even focused on the size because of how much it sparkled and threw flashes of rainbow!

I saw a GOG video on that, it's FASCINATING. Its like it gives you the Star129 look on an H&A. Id want to see that in person and under a loupe I think.

I cannot wait for you to get your set stone! :)

I'll try to take a pic through the loupe next time I go. I actually forgot to look bcuz I was so caught up in the sparkles
