I''m getting it tomorrow if there isn''t any huge opposition. It''s not exactly as high in color as I would have liked, but all things considered, this is the one that fits my budget, yet still does not overly compromose quality.

Carat weight: 0.82
Cut: Very Good
Color: I
Clarity: SI1
Price per carat: $2,533
Depth %: 71.8%
Table %: 74%
Symmetry: Good
Polish: Excellent
Girdle: Medium to slightly thick
Culet: None
Fluorescence: None
Measurements: 5.35 x 5.25 x 3.77 mm
Length/width ratio: 1.02

What shape is it? If it''s round, the depth and table are both way too big. If it''s a princess, the numbers don''t look too outrageous, but look for a table that''s less than the depth (this one is greater). I''d also go for VG or Ex symmetry (this is only good). You''d also have to make sure it''s eye-clean.

Personally, I''d skip it and find something better. What''s your maximum budget for the stone?

We would need photos and an ASET image if available, to be able to judge this diamond, so see if you can get at least a pic as that would be very helpful.

OK, so I''m going forward with this one. Better Clarity. Ideal Symmetry, a smaller table than the depth. AGS certified, for LESS than what the previous diamond was. This is a princess cut.

Carat weight: 0.84
Cut: Very Good
Color: I
Clarity: VS2
Price per carat: $2,377
Depth %: 73.6%
Table %: 60.7%
Symmetry: Ideal
Polish: Ideal
Girdle: Thin to slightly thick
Culet: None
Fluorescence: None
Measurements: 5.20 x 5.20 x 3.83 mm
Length/width ratio: 1.00

The 5.2 x 5.2 is also the precise measurements needed for the diamond to fit my setting!

What happened to the Expert Select from Whiteflash, did you call? Just curious if they had a look at it.

This one looks more promising! And if it truly is ideal cut, it will face up white even though it''s I color (my princess is an I)...see the caveat below though. I like that it''s perfectly square as well.

A few more questions...

Which lab is the cert from? This matters because I/VS2 is not always I/VS2; you can trust the grading if it''s an AGS or GIA graded stone, and it MAY be OK if it''s EGL-USA, but the other labs (IGI and EGL-Europe or Israel) have been known to be up to 2-3 grades more lenient than GIA/AGS. So what you think is an I may be a K if you''re unlucky! And for a princess, I wouldn''t go much below I, because they show color more than rounds do.

Do you have pictures, Idealscope, or ASET images? It''s very difficult to judge a fancy cut based on the numbers alone; you really need to see pics. Princess cut quality isn''t quite as exact a science yet as round cut quality.

Which vendor is this from? You might want to consider a vendor with a good upgrade policy, since a 0.8 ct princess will be about the size of a 0.5ct round, and diamonds tend to "shrink" over time! Whiteflash and Good Old Gold have the best upgrade policies around here; James Allen has an OK one, and Blue Nile doesn''t have one.
