Hey all, I need some help. I am going to look at this stone tomorrow and want to know if it is cut well. These are the only specs that I have.

Round Brilliant 1.19 F SI1(100% eye clean)
polish: VG
symmetry: EX
Depth: 61.7
Table: 57
Crown Angle: 34.5
Pavilion Angle: 41.0
Flourescence: none
Measurements: 6.78 x 6.83 x 4.20

Price is $6500.

Thanks!

It looks promising by the numbers, can you get an Idealscope image to post? If not, it looks to be a possible choice, see what you think when you see it. I take it the stone is with a jeweller rather than online?

Yes, the stone is at Quest. It is also GIA. So are the numbers good?

The numbers look fine, an Idealscope is always nice to confirm, but it looks like a good bet to me.

ok, I am a bit confused. As far as cut goes should the depth, table, crown and pavilion angle all be about the same on each well cut stone no matter what carat size?

Yes. A range of proportions many PSers like are as follows.

depth - 60 - 62% or a bit above
table - 54- 57%
crown angle - 34 - 35 deg
pavilion angle - 40.6 - 41 deg.

with the shallower ( cr 34 / pav 40.6) and steeper ( cr 35/ pav 41) angles, an Idealscope is useful to make sure these angles are complementary on a particular stone with that combo. You can see with your diamond that the crown is mid range which may be a good fit for the 41 pav angle, but an IS would be useful and of course your own eyes when you see it. It looks to be well worth consideration with the info we have.

Lorelei, where do I get an idealscope of the diamond? From the jeweler? What if he can''t produce that to me today, what am I looking for when I see it tomorrow?

I have two stones to chose from, here is the other...

Round Brilliant 1.10 E SI1 (100% eye clean)
polish: EX
symmetry: EX
table: 57
depth: 61.7
crown angle: 35.0
crown: 14.5%
pavilion angle: 40.8
pavilion: 43.0
culet: none
slightly think girdle
fluorescence: none

sorry, measurements on 1.10 are 6.57x6.65x4.08

Regarding the IS, don't worry too much, it is a useful tool, but no real substitute for your own eyes. Having said that, Pete might have an IS, ask him. The other diamond looks good too.

A good way to check out diamonds, is to ask if you can look at them away from the jewellery store lights, ask the jeweller if that is ok. Diamonds don't always sparkle, but even in dull light when they are in ' rest mode', they still should look attractive and appealing. So look at them in the store lights and ask if you can take them outside to view. Experiment in shade and with the sun behind you, to the side and just get a feel for the stone. See which stone ' speaks' to you the most. Take your time, it is a large purchase and a big decision and don't allow yourself to be pressured. As you are going to Quest, I am sure they will want to help you to feel good about your purchase and help you make the best decision.

Thanks so much Lorelei, you have been so helpful. Pete has been wonderful and took a lot of time with me to learn what I like. I will let you know which one I decide on.

Lorelei, I have the GIA certs on both diamonds now and they are scoring different on the cut advisor. The 1.19 cert says excellent cut and scores a 1.9 and only excellent on light return and very good on all others. The 1.10 says very good for cut and is scoring a 1.16 with excellent on light return, fire, scintillation and very good on spread.

Don't worry about the HCA, it should be used to eliminate poor performers only and not to select stones. In most cases, it is used to eliminate most diamonds which score badly, leaving the ones that score around 2 and under, for further evaluation. In some cases diamonds scoring over 2 can be fab stones and well worth having. Also in some cases, the HCA can penalize a steeper pavilion angle of 41 deg and above also. The tool cannot physically see the stones, therefore it can't with any accuracy give you an idea of the personality or beauty of a diamond, so you have no worries!

ok, I will stop worrying now. I will just pick the one that sparkles more to me. Wish me LUCK!!!
