Is this a good buy?

Great forum. I just found this forum today and immediately signed up.

My boyfriend and I found a GIA cert diamond for $7505:

Round Brilliant
6.33-6.41 X 3.97mm Measurement
1.00 carat
Depth 62.3%
Table 60%
Girdle: Slightly thick to thick, faceted
Cutlet: None
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Very Good
VS2
D color
Fluorescence None

Is this a good buy? I'm concerned about whether the girdle is too thick.

Also, one of the jewelers told us that there is usually a 10% higher premium for AGS cert diamonds. Especially the ones that are triple zeros. Is this true?

(eta: Please also comment on whether you think this diamond is ideal cut or not)

Its not even close to being an ideal cut and its $2000 overpriced compared to internet pricing.

AGS cert diamonds often do carry a premium tripple zero specificaly.
Then you have the next step up which is heart and arrows which is a little more.
The good news is that for the same price as that one you can get an h&a diamond online.
If you want too you could drop to a G eyeclean si1 and gain a lot in size.

Its a 1.28 and would likely rank in the top 5% or better of all the diamonds in its size/price range.

6.33-6.41 X 3.97mm Measurement This is the main problem to me. The stone has a small diameter, due to the thick girdle. A nicely made 1ct should measure at least 6.45mm in average. Basically you're paying for some weight you can't see, as this diamond looks like a 0.92-0.93ct

Depth 62.3% It's a bit on the high side, and should be due to the thick girdle.

Girdle: Slightly thick to thick, faceted Again, the thick girdles hides some weight, making the stone look smaller.

To sum up... It could be an attractive stone, assuming the angles are well combined, but we can't tell without a Sarin or OGI report. What we can tell you for sure is that this stone is NOT an ideal make. It may be a nice sut, but again, we need more details. Be aware that you can do MUCH better on the internet... Take a look at this one, for example: 1.13 F/SI 1 H&A.

Hi...the colour is great and hte clarity is good too. With GIA , you will never go wrong and yes AGS Stones are usually a bit more expensive. The diamond its not within ideal cut but as said not all un-ideal cut are lousy stone. Well you get to look at it yourself and how you felt about it? if yopu think you are ok with it then you should go buy the stone. The price is not that high in a retail shop but maybe you can try pushing for a further 10% discount.

I understand everyone who uses the net will be able to get the same stone specification much cheaper but i would say having to look at the stone and how you felt is also important. Plus if anything happen your retailer will be able to help you out face -to face.

This diamond is far from ideal and overly priced for the cut.

Strmrdr has identified some fine alternatives that are much better buys. Not having the information on the crown/pavilion angles and girdle percentages, it is hard to really assess whether this diamond is a good performer or not. But based on the given information, one would be safe to conclude that it is not. I suspect either a very steep crown/shallow pavilion or shallow crown/steep pavilion angles.

Thank you everyone for your posts. I am leaning "no" towards the ring at this point. It is unblievable how jewelry stores can label a ring such as this as ideal. They even said that it's very very close to hearts and arrows. My untrained eyes did see some hearts and arrows in the scope.

Is there anyway to determine from a GIA cert if a stone is an ideal cut?
