Hello everyone,

I''ve been visiting this website every night for almost 2 months now and curretntly i''m talking to 2 vendors on a potential purchase.
I''ve read about the 4C''s and am glad/grateful for such a wonderful lessons. I almost feel like an expert until I run into this dilemma tonight

please help me if this is a good buy?

My boyfriend and I just went to see a friend who has a friend that wanted to sell an e-ring
It''s a platinum/ Ritani - Halo(custome make) - pave - eternity style ring.
this is what i know about the center stone: 1.9 carat, H-I color, and VS1 in clarity

He (the one who wanted to sell the ring) doesn''t have, more like misplaced, the receipt/certificate. He''s asking for $10,000

no certificate means no cut grade - no a lot of info; however, spot check on the web shows me that this is a good deal if it''s what he said

i''m dealing with him that i''ll pay for it now, but i''ll take it to an appraisal and if what he claims is not true, i must get full refund
i''m waiting for his answer (he''s in california and i''m in texas) but at the same time, feeling a bit uneasy.
yeah, sure, he''s a friend of a friend of a friend, but i don''t know him personally, and who can guaantee that I get my refund???

On the other hand, the ring looks beautiful on my hand

My family goes ohhh and ahhhh, but when they know that i have no paper for it, they go oooppsss

I must make a decision before/by thursday as he''ll need to send it back to his friend in california.
I wanted to pass because i have little time to decide, but it does look beautiful and what if he honest about the specs?? that would be a great deal, isn''t it?

what do you guys think? buy it and take a risk of no return?
please tell me what you would do?

NO NO NO NO. No return, no deal. There is NO information on cut, and quite frankly, everyone thinks they bought an ideal cut stone. And WHO besides the friend is saying it is an H-I VS1 either??? Just the fact that it has a "range" for the color means it doesn't have a GIA or AGS cert...

If this friend is so sure he should be willing to put his $ where his mouth is and let you get it INDEPENDENTLY APPRAISED BEFORE PURCHASE.

If he is in CA, have HIM take it to an appraiser of your choice, whom YOU are paying and get it appraised. If it is what he says, you pay him and get the ring. If not, nothing lost.

Completely and totally agree with neatfreak 1000% percent. If he won''t let you appraise it (at your expense) before you buy, then no deal.

Another ditto here.

thank you neatfreak!!!!!! that is a great suggestion
tomorrow i''ll place that idea on the table and see how he reacts
now time to look for an appraisal in san jose and orange county
thank you

Have him pluck the diamond out and send it to GIA in California for a certification??
Does this guy have axcess to the store he bought the ring at? (Ask if the records are on file)

I just saw a 1.5 sell on ebay with no papers and no return for $2000

Seller claimed to be selling for a friend who lost/misplaced the G VS2 GIA certificate......
Seller wouldn''t answer any of my easy questions then blocked my $400 bid when I wanted to pick it up locally.

If you have the ring in hand, have it cleaned and appraised.

If you are in possession of the ring, why can''t you take it to a reputable appraiser now? You still have two days.

You shouldn't feel rushed to make such an important and expensive decision. The whole friend of a friend thing is so risky. No documentation, no receipt, if could be stolen for all you know. You can't verify anything. What's the big rush to send it back? Does he have another buyer? And no way would I buy it figuring there was some return policy. That just isn't done. Too risky. If this person was interested in selling the ring he could have gotten an appraisal himself. How does he know what it's worth? Is he basing it on what he paid for it? Or what he saw on eBay?

You want the experience of picking out an engagement ring to be positive.
