Hi,

I have been looking at a 1.56ct Asscher cut with F color and VS1 clarity. I have attached a picture (and will attach more below). The specs are:

GIA graded
Size: 1.56ct
Color: F
Clarity: VS1
Depth: 67%
Table: 61%
Dimensions: 6.50-6.31 x 4.23 mm
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Fluorescence: None

There is a diagram of the diamond at the bottom of the GIA report that shows the table and depth percentages along with three other qualitative measurements (I don''t know what these are though). One at the base of the stone says ''small''. One to the left and next to the bottom half of the stone says ''slightly thick'' and the one to the left of the top half of the stone says ''medium''.

The asking price is $10,864.

My questions are:

-Do you think this is a good price for this diamond?
-What quality diamond would you consider this?
-What do those qualitative measurements mean on the bottom of the GIA report?

Any help/info is greatly appreciated.

...and last but not least, fifth.

I also just found out that the crown height is 16.8%. Is that too high? Does it depend on the combination of the other proportions?

Hi Aron,
"Small" likely refers to the culet size (at the bottom of the diamond where it comes to a point)
Medium to slightly thick refers to the girdle thickness
"Strmdr" is our resident asscher specialist, so hopefully he can give you some feedback regarding the performance of this particular stone and the crown height, etc.

What is the lenth and width?
It is actualy technicaly a squarish emerald cut rather than an asscher in my opinion.
They can be very beautiful, its not a downgrade if you like the looks.
16.8% ch is great.
Overal going by the pictures it looks like a very pretty diamond I would consider buying.

The length is 6.50 mm and the width is 6.31 mm

Here is the difference between an asscher and a squarish emerald.
On an asscher the culet would come to a point rather than keel as the arrow points too.

face up the difference is the 2 points the arrow points too would touch in an asscher rather than having the line between them.

I agree with Stmdr. It is a teensy tiny bit rectangular. But I actually love that look & many antique asschers have similar proportions (a bit rectangular). That look can make the stone look a bit larger when set North/South -- tricks the eye. My Asscher/Sq. Emerald is set that way and it helps make it pop.

I actually really like the pictures of this stone. And the price seems very fair - verging on great! Especially with a crown height like that and EX/EX for polish & sym. Daniel K used to snap up most of the EX/EXs it seemed so they were harder to find & premium priced.

BTW-- Have you seen the Daniel K closeout asscher rings over at Pearlmans Jewelry website?? They have some real bargains on pre-set but GORGEOUS designer rings. Could be one stop shopping if you don't have a specific setting in mind.

not bad, not likely to be visible to most people.
I like the diamond and would consider it myself.
I debate if I would rate it a kicken as an asscher but it is a kicken emerald cut.

I don''t have an informed option, but I love the look and the small, even steps. If it appeals to you, go with it. (If not, anyone wanna lend me 10K?

Thanks so much for all of your help!!! My girlfriend told her sisters a few months back that she really liked a squarish emerald cut, but when we went shopping (her sisters and I) we thought this stone looked great and it was advertised as an Asscher. I read up on Asscher cuts and saw that sometimes people mistakenly called square emerald diamonds asschers...looks like that was the case. So, I''m happy either way.

Once again thanks so much. These forums help novices like me pick something out really special for their loved one. Thank you thank you thank you!!!

I completely agree with Deco and strm. As strm pointed out, it''s more of a square emerald--generic asschers are called square emerald cuts, but yours really is a square emerald! I really wouldn''t consider it a flaw by any means, though, in fact it makes your stone very unique. I think all the demensions look great, especially the 16% crown height! That''s fantastic! The pictures look great! And Deco is so right about the Ex/Ex cut rarity, I had a very hard time finding one as well and when I found a rare one online they were usually $11k or more.

Oh, and I do think you''d probably notice the rectagular-ness of it, so you might consider that when choosing a setting. My stone measures 6.54 x 6.40 and I can tell that it''s not exactly square. I had it set E/W (I feel strange calling it that since the difference is so miniscule) because I have wide fingers and wanted as much width coverage as possible.

Thanks for the advice NewEnglandLady. I too am a New Englander (grew up in Hampton, NH), but now live in NYC.

I am confident this is the right diamond for my girlfriend and your collective comments have given me a much needed confidence with my decision.

I absolutely love it! It''s beautiful...

I''m no expert, but I think it''s a stunning stone. I would need to focus on my breathing if my husband brought that home!
