I'm looking for opinions - anything you have to say - from this forum because you are all so experienced and I really feel like I don't know what I'm looking at here. I really liked what I saw in the photo until I used that AGA/NAJA cut calculator and suddenly it seems terrible. I can still return it, but I want it to work out.

1.74 Carat F SI1 eye-clean princess for $12,400 USD

1.74-Carat-Princess.jpg

Length:6.79
Width:6.69
Depth:4.85
Total Depth:72.5%
Table percent:57
Crown height:72.5
Girdle (from):Very thin
Girdle (to):Thick
Polish:Good
Symmetry:Excellent / Very Good

Tab Percent: 3A
Crown Height: 4B
Girdle: 2B
Depth: 1A
Polish: 1A
Symmetry: 1A
TotalGrade: 4A

These results really scared me, but then I saw a Solasfera diamond on GOG with similar results so now I don't know what to think...

Your opinions/thoughts/critiques, please, with this limited information?

I like it! Love the small table, faceting looks really nice. You have it in hand already? Do you have photos per chance?

I think you need to check the crown height. 72.5 does not make sense. Anyway it looks like it has potential from the picture.

yes I think this is what is throwing the cut class tool off...it cannot possibly have 72.5 crown height.

I bought it today and it's on its way but I won't see it for a few more days. I liked the small table, too. I was so sick of the uncertainty with finding a diamond online that I decided to just try my luck and hope I like this as much in person as in the photo. Now I am realizing that even a year of lurking these forums to educate myself has not prepared me to actually "look" at a diamond and "know" if it is a good performer. I really have no idea. I mean, I feel like I'm buying art or something - Is whether I like it all that matters or do I get it appraised, ask the expert opinion and hope I didn't get taken? I'm seriously out of my element and appreciate the feedback!

About the crown height: That is actually what got me worried. I didn't see how it was even possible. Then I ran this solasfera diamond through the AGA cut grading calculator thing and it said it had a crown height of 77.4!!?! I hope something is wrong with the calculator and not the diamond...

I'll ask if the seller has ASET, brilliancescope, ideal-scope, etc as well.

Where did you find that number for crown height? It is not on the lab report. That number, 72.5, on the diagram is the depth.

ohhhhh - that's the depth? See, I just entered the info that it asked for and clicked submit and these are the numbers I got - it was perplexing to say the least.

I ran the specs of an AGS 000 princess cut. It got this horrible result:

Tab Percent: 3B
Crown Height: 1A
Girdle: 1A
Depth: 1A
Polish: 1A
Symmetry: 1A
TotalGrade: 3A

The calculator does not like smaller tables, even though I think they have more pizzaz.

The diamond

This is weird. The AGS report lists the diamond cut grade as Ideal, but BN has it listed as Fair.

I had to wait a week for the ASET & Sarin report. Please tell me what this means. It looks like it will be dark around the edges and I'm not sure if the white means leakage or if leakage is shown in black because their email seemed to suggest leakage is shown in black. If it's not worth the $12,400 and I can get better in this size for not much more, please let me know because I can just return it (it actually hasn't shipped yet, so it will be easy) :)

If you go to GOG and look at their Superior cut princesses and Solasfera's they have a very small table....lucky you finding that needle in a haystack. smallest on most princesses are the mid 60% for the tables. I'm sure this diamond will be awesome in your price range. Check out the asets on the GOG princess cuts and compare to yours.

Also if you watch the GOG tutorials it will answer most of your questions. your aset looks good in my opinion and for your price point don't think you could do much better.

The AGS report will be more accurate on the cut. Like I stated compare your cut to those on GOG...rare to find those small tables.

I think you found a keeper.

I did compare the images to ideal cut diamonds and I am just not impressed. I think my disappointment is amplified because I was really set on finding an AGS 0, and this diamond had that small table and the look of something that could have gotten a 0 for cut so I took a chance. However, the ASET really shattered that possibility, right?

This is from the email accompanying the ASET images:
Our gemologist has determined that this diamond has a beautiful icy white color performance and that its main inclusions blend well under the crown. The diamond has overall nice light performance but is darker under the table compared to the brightness in the crown. The gemologist also complemented its unique cut for having such a small table. Overall, this diamond is a great value and I feel that you'll be very pleased when you see it for yourself.

These comments worry me even more. "Nice" light performance is a far cry from "excellent" light performance. :|

It sounds like you are working with James Allen, and I don't like it when they say nice light performance either :)

So here's what they just told me on one I'm working on:
"I have great news, our gemologist has determined that diamond xxx is very bright and has great light performance. As expected, it faces perfectly eye clean and has a beautiful spread. It also has a nice H color performance and will face up perfectly white" Then they closed with breathtaking sparkle and confident I've found a great diamond. SO, looks like I'm going with it - On several others they reviewed for me they didn't sound as positive or actually said they don't recommend them so I've grown to trust what they have to say. On mine I figure the H color is probably average so it says "nice".

I'm a newbie not an expert, I just understand how conflicted you feel -
I really do think it looks beautiful though -- At least you know you can return it without a problem if you aren't in love.

It looks like a great stone to me

Yeah - I just felt they were trying to be positive about a mediocre diamond and since I've never bought from them before really didn't know what to think.

I decided to forgo this diamond though because for only $1500 more I can get this diamond, 1.7 G SI1 A Cut Above from WF. With the JA diamond I would have to pay to have it set because I want a setting from WF. Plus with WF I got the PS discount on top of the wire transfer discount, on top of the 14% setting discount with purchase of any ACA or ES.

The difference literally comes down to $1500 after the diamonds are set. Do you think it's worth it? Granted, the WF diamond is a G instead of an F, but that doesn't bother me. Do you guys think the ACA is a better buy than this JA one? With the ACA I can essentially buy blind and not have anxiety like I would with this JA one.

$1500 for peace of mind is fine in my book. Plus I like WF upgrade policy better.

wow!! If I had the $ I would pick that one too. I think you found it!

That also looks like a great diamond, and WF does have a better upgrade policy :twirl:
