Hello, I'm so glad I found this site!
Can anyone tell me what they think of this ring? Is it worth the money we paid or should I return it and look for a better diamond? The problem is Mappins has a "do not pay for one year" payment plan which is very important to my bf at this time.

We bought it from Mappins STC for $7000 taxes all in. We also went to Spence, but found it was way overpriced and high pressure sales.
I've posted a photo of the certificate and of the ring. I personally realy like the ring because it is very sparkly. It was hard to capture the sparkle with my camera phone.

The mearsurments on the certificate are a little hard to see so they are:
6.79 x 6.75 x 4.16mm

I will appreciate all opinions and feedback :) :appl:

ouch. return it.

Good Old Gold has financing I think.

Thanks for the info everyone!
After comparing the stats on the web sites you recommended, it seems like we overpaid for this ring at Mappins. It's too bad because it is a very pretty ring.

We will think about going to an independent jeweller and see if we can get a better deal and hopefully some type of financing. We live in Toronto. Any recommendations for nearby establishments that won't overcharge us like Mappins?

Oh, please do return it! That is not a reliable grading certificate for one thing. It almost certainly is lower than F I1. And I don't really think I1 is a good choice for a piece of jewelry that is the most important that you'll ever have, more than likely. I'd like to see you get into the SI1 to SI2 range at least. And a GIA or AGS grading report that will actually be reliable.

It would be SO good for you to return it and start over from scratch. We can help you find a much better quality stone. I do think Good Old Gold has 6 month interest-free financing (and I assume you'd pay interest after that time). There is a page on financing on their site (and there is likely no sales tax if you are not in NY). And while you are on their site, take some time in the section about the 4 C's and learn more about the importance of Cut, especially.

Unfortunately, you overpaid. I'm sure you'd rather spend that sum and get some wedding bands out of the deal too!
This jeweler was recommended in your area: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/excellent-toronto-jeweller-bandiera-jewellers.64564/

If financing is a big thing, since idk Toronto at all and PS usually has no qualms about sight-unseen, I'd second the suggestions already given and start from scratch with someone like Good Old Gold.

Good luck! :))

I completely agree!

Does the company GOG uses for financing actually do financing for Canadians? If so, I'd use it myself for my next ring, I'm wanting a 5 stone from them. :naughty:

If I were you I'd check out this place to view what well cut, quality diamonds look like, they carry Hearts on Fire diamonds, ask to look them and compare them to your stone side by side, you will see a difference.

Leave your wallet at home, use it just as a research tool...come back here and tell us what you think.
I live in Alberta and my ring is currently being made in the US, I can vouch for how beneficial and easy it is to purchase an E-ring across the border, if you have concerns about it.

OK , it's going back.... the good thing about Mappins is that it has a 100 day return for full refund policy. It's getting sized so they are probably going to call us next week to pick it up. We will return it to them at that time. :( I just looked at Good Old Gold web site and they do have 6 month financing and some really nice looking rings and diamonds. I'll have to confirm how Canadians are able to get the rings serviced, cleanings and check ups etc...

I'm also going to check out the jewellers on Victoria Street by Dundas Square and some other places Damiani's in Woodbridge (seems to be a favourite on this site.)

Thanks for all your feedback. I will share this with my BF. I'm just worried that he won't go for the internet purchase. But at least we know Mappins did not give us a good deal.

Thanks again!

Try not to be sad, this is a good thing, you are just in time to get a much nicer diamond ;))

I know it's silly to be sad. But I know it's better to wait and get something nicer. I would feel terrible knowing he spent too much $$ for that ring when it's really worth less $$.

I'll post the new ring when I get it. It may be a while though...

I'd recommend sticking to GIA and AGS graded stones only this time, both are much more reliable for grades compared to other labs.
You can also post the numbers on the certificate here, before you commit to buying, so that more experienced Pricescopers can confirm you are getting a great stone this time for your money.

Big ditto to this!!! I am not sure whether the financing would work for those in Canada or not. That would be an important question to ask. You will get a higher quality stone at a better price at one of the jewelers that specializes in well cut stones on the internet because their pricing can be better because of the volume they do. Plus you have hundreds of testimonials of their work here. You generally are going to pay more at a regular jewelry store, and what I found was that none of the ones in my area had any kind of selection of GIA Excellent cut or AGS Ideal cut stones for me to choose from. They were lower cut quality and more expensive than the ones I eventually found here as I was searching. But do just ask for GIA excellent or AGS ideal and then you will not waste time on stones that are inferior.

Good luck!
