Re: Is This a Crazy Idea????? - Thinking of Upgrade Already?

hi psoens--
i have to agree with the rest of the group here. you have an amazing stone--keep it, enjoy it, and never go on PS again (well except to pick a wedding band). you'll go mad overthinking things, get dss, and spend money on stuff that you just dont need. :)

with regards to bragging rights--very rarely does my wife ever have conversations about the size of her ring. after a few times during the initial engagement period, it just never comes up again. and besides, saying "it's about 2 and a quarter carats" is no shame at all--it'll probably be the largest ring of any of her friends.... besides, its a better cut, whiter stone than 99 percent of the people you'll meet... you'd take that stone any day over a larger, crappycut, yellow stone that hits a magical number for size... my wife's stone, at 2.33 is in this same no-man's land category of over 2, but under 2.5... dont sweat it at all! take the $5k and buy her a spectacular wedding band with it...

btw how old are you guys? we were 29 when we got engaged... she'll probably get looks around boston for having a larger than most ring anyow...

and since were both boston guys, have to ask... where are you thinking of getting married?

ps: sorry forthe crummy spelling... im on an ipad andam waaay too lazy to fix the typos.

I agree that the ring you have is far larger than most have for a first engagement ring. But the black inclusion would rule it out for me, period. I agree that the clarity probably has a lot to do with the price.

Her current ring is stunning as is. I'd work on your house next and save the upgrade for a 5 ot 10 year anniversary...

Re: Is This a Crazy Idea????? - Thinking of Upgrade Already?

ok, everyone, I think we'll just keep the ring we have now! It's a beautiful stone, it's in a beautiful setting, and the price was great as well. There will always be stones out there which are bigger, better clarity, higher color, etc, but there's a time and a place to get that sorted if we ever chose to, and for our current situation, nevermind the fact that she adores her ring, trading up right now probably isn't the best idea. I also contacted WF, who don't recommend having the diamond called in, probably because of the black crystal under the table I would imagine. While it may look good on paper, I'm not sure it would be nicer in person than the stone we have right now.

sna, we are actually from NY (I think there was another guy from Boston who was looking for a similar 2.5+ round brilllant if I remember correctly), both 28, and getting married at the Plaza this summer, so yes, as I'm sure you know, with wedding venues being ridiculously expensive in both NY and Boston, best to save the difference and put it towards something more practical! Still have to get around to sorting the wedding band, but that's a topic in it's own...

So, thanks all you pricescopers, for talking some sense into me!!!

Re: Is This a Crazy Idea????? - Thinking of Upgrade Already?

I didn't read through all the replies, only through to the part where you said the first ring cost was a stretch for you. Even before I got to that important piece of information, my immediate response was -

yes that is a crazy idea and noooooooooooooo way don't upgrade!

You did your homework, you made your choice and your fiance is happy with the a beautiful stone that faces up only slightly smaller than the upgrade. If you had made an uninformed purchase and spent a lot of money on a dud, then yes, you'd have a reason to want to upgrade. But since that is far from the case, just embrace the choice you made and choose to be content with your ring.

My advice comes from the perspective of being happily married for 17 1/2 years and raising 4 kids. You will be making a lot of financial decisions, big and small over your lifetime together. Start things off right. Don't browse Pricescope until your next big jewelry purchase. Put your old vendors in your blocked contacts email list.

Please accept my sincere wishes for a healthy and happy life together! Congrats on your engagement!

Haha, sorry! I should've read the thread. You made the right choice.

Congrats again!
