As you all might seen in my previous thread, I purchased a 2.26 F SI1 AGS0 stone for my now fiancee on valentine's day, and she loved it!!!

https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/valentines-day-proposal-not-quite-but-soon.171893/

Originally, I was hoping to find a 2.5 excellent cut round brilliant in the D-F/SI1 range, for an ideal budget of around 30K. I purchased her stone through sna77's recommendation, and although it's not quite 2.5 carats, it's beautiful. It is an AGS 0 stone, and on top of that, extremely clean for an SI1. However, now in a bit of a dilema. Another pricescope vendor has just pulled up a stone for me which looks quite beautiful as well, guess they didnt know we had ended our search awhile ago. It is a 2.55 D, SI stone, please find attached the certificate, I have been told that this diamond is eye clean from both the top and sides. It is $4000 more than our original stone, discounted because of the medium blue fluroescence no doubt, and scores a 1.2 on the HCA.

I know my fiancee really did want a 2.5 originally and D color as well, and for this price, we might upgrade - not sure if it's worth it though, still waiting for ASET and idealscope of the new stone, but if you were to look only at the certificates for now, is there one stone you would recommend over the other?

And, am I opening a can of worms here? She loves her current ring, it's beautiful, I don't want to get in the habit of trading in every time we run across another nice stone!

Re: Is This a Crazy Idea????? - Thinking of Upgrade Already?

If you can afford it... why not?

Can you get an IS (Idealscope Image) for the stone?

It's a D. It's got Florescence. It's visually bigger. If the IS works out, go for it.

Re: Is This a Crazy Idea????? - Thinking of Upgrade Already?

If you already proposed and she loves the diamond...I would stick with it. Has she mentioned anything about wanting to switch to a higher color?

Re: Is This a Crazy Idea?? - Thinking of Upgrade Already??!!

Already proposed, and she absolutely loves her ring. Visually, I don't think eitiher of us would notice that much of a difference between the D or F color, I did know that she wanted a 2.5 carat, buy hey, a 2.26 isn't too bad either! This new stone would be more for bragging rights than anything else, Im sure. We were honestly not even looking at stones anymore until another vendor messaged me about this one. I'm all for trading up, but honestly, she's only had this ring for about a month, and we spent a long time finding it.

Gypsy, am waiting to get ASET and IS images.

Re: Is This a Crazy Idea????? - Thinking of Upgrade Already?

If it's a different vendor how can you upgrade? Are you still in the return period for the first stone? Would you sell the first stone yourself?

Re: Is This a Crazy Idea????? - Thinking of Upgrade Already?

If you've had the stone for about a month how can you return it?

Most importantly, many women are very sentimental about their original engagement ring. Bragging rights?? That may not be so important to your DF.

Re: Is This a Crazy Idea????? - Thinking of Upgrade Already?

Tough choice. How does she feel about trading her diamond? Part of me thinks that if she loves her stone and has an attachment to it, then maybe you should leave well enough alone, but if she is still wishing that she had the 2.5, then whats the difference in trading now or in 5 years?? If I could afford it, I would go for it!

completely agree.

Re: Is This a Crazy Idea????? - Thinking of Upgrade Already?

Holy damn, the new one on paper sounds magnificent. If you can swing it, and can trade your current one in at this vendor, or return it, and the IS/ASET/etc looks great....I probably would do it but then be done for yknow, a decade.

I agree. I don't know of any girl who would turn down an upgrade to a larger diamond with a higher colour! :wink2: (unless she's extremely sentimental about the diamond you proposed to her with). Have you discussed this with her?

ETA: I'd ask the vendor about this new stone's eyeclean-ness. I'm a wee bit worried abt the crystal and cloud at/ near to the table.

Re: Is This a Crazy Idea????? - Thinking of Upgrade Already?

The 2.55 D is a virtual stone, so I will have Wf try to pull the stone themselves, and upgrade through them.

And to be very honest, the 30K that I spent on her ring was a big splurge, the difference in this new stone is actually closer to 5.3K, which wouldn't break our bank account, but it is substantial. We have alot of outgoing expenses at the moment, am trying to save up for a house, so maybe the money would be better spent there.

Sentiments aside, I know she would never say no to a bigger stone, but if we were able to find a nice stone now, there's no reason why we won't be able to find another one in a few years time. Ok, will post the images once I get them.

I would definitely put the $$ to the house fund and consider upgrading later on!

+1. If this was 100% disposable income, then I'd say go for it, but you've gone bigger purchases ahead that need the money more! Say, the house and the whole reason for an engagement ring.... the WEDDING! :))

I think you've taken things to a point right now, and 5.3K is alot of cash. Really, it is especially if you consider adding that to your downpayment on a house or retirement savings. I personally think you should be happy and she's happy, its OVER 2cts already, I'd get my other items in order so you can play upgrade later on.

If either of you lost your job today, or tommorow, how deep of Snow whould you guys be in? thinking about being another 5k deeper in snow makes it even worse. :nono: dont do this to you and your fiance's relationship.

couldn't agree more. You've already stretched to get what you hVe now- to stretch another 5.4K... Is it worth it for the small size and color upgrade?

Re: Is This a Crazy Idea????? - Thinking of Upgrade Already?

Hmm, thanks for the input everyone. Yes, we are still on the young side (relatively speaking, of course!), and are looking to buy our house/start a family within the next year, nevermind the cost of the wedding! So yes, while in the long run 5.3k won't make much of a difference, right now, I'm thinking that it may not be wise to use that money towards what was already a pricey but beautiful ring for us. The thing I try to keep remembering is that we have a lifetime trade up policy, so there's no need to rush this, I am sure there will be a time in the next coming years when we're in a better financial position to upgrade, and who knows, maybe even for a 3 carat!

I have also just gotten word back from the vendor and am told that there is a "black crystal under the table - is visible under a loupe but is eye clean from 6 - 8" - so maybe not as eye-clean as I originally intended, and maybe also why the stone is priced so cheap. Pricescopers, would you still consider looking at the stone? I don't want to pay the charge to ask WF to call it in, take pictures, etc, if it's really not worth it at the end of the day.

Re: Is This a Crazy Idea????? - Thinking of Upgrade Already?

Your diamond is spectacular, and to me, $5k is a lot to spend for the bragging rights! In a year when you get HIT in the face with the costs of houses and babies you might be happy you saved now :)) And, you might not care about the diamond specs as much!

Re: Is This a Crazy Idea????? - Thinking of Upgrade Already?

Lol, very true, dreamer d, guess real life settles in and diamonds take a backseat when the kids start coming!

Well, not entirely, I have two kids under 4 years old and still spend too much time and money on diamonds  But I have to think long and hard before I do, and $5k changes its "value" after kids when funds get so much tighter.

Re: Is This a Crazy Idea????? - Thinking of Upgrade Already?

I'm one of the ones that said 'go for it' earlier, but having gotten more information, I've changed my mind. It doesn't sound as though this is truly disposable income to me. If you have a house, wedding, and family planned all withing the next year or so, I would without a doubt pass on this stone. Babies are more fun to spend money on, and you will brag about them way more than your fiances diamond! ;)

Re: Is This a Crazy Idea????? - Thinking of Upgrade Already?

I agree that you should put that extra cash aside, with more information you've just given us. I'd never ever use money otherwise designated for house-buying etc for buying bling. She already has a beautiful diamond.

Re: Is This a Crazy Idea????? - Thinking of Upgrade Already?

You just proposed with a beautiful diamond ring!!! Enjoy that stone and the sentiment behind it!

If you're already getting caught up in the idea of upgrading, when will it end? You'll ALWAYS be finding other beautiful stones and at some point, it's the right time to appreciate what you have. If the $5K is really wanting to be spent, how about a pair of earrings or a pendant? ;))

Re: Is This a Crazy Idea????? - Thinking of Upgrade Already?

Is it really going to make that much of a difference in bragging rights to go from a 2.2ct to a 2.5ct?? I doubt it. She has a honkin' huge stone right now and to the untrained eye (that would be the huddled masses not on PS!) it is still a honkin' huge stone.

Deals will always be available. There will be other diamonds at a time when perhaps the $5K difference (while affordable now, as you say) isn't that significant with other financial plans you have on your plate. House, wedding, whatever.

You are right - not too many women would turn down a larger diamond (honey, you are preaching to the choir on this forum!) - but if it were me, I'd stick with the original one and funnel that money back into a house purchase.

you'll make the right decision for your situation - best of luck!

nicely put.

Re: Is This a Crazy Idea????? - Thinking of Upgrade Already?

The new stone is honestly not that much bigger, so I'm not sure the upgrade would be worth it, cost wise. On her finger, you probably wouldn't notice much difference.

I agree 100%. In context, the answer to your original question is: yes, it is a crazy idea best to forget it. :-)

same here- i definitely changed my inital answer of go for it- to don't do it. too much money for what would most likely not be a noticable color and size difference.
