Is this 1.50 carat round too good to be true?

Hi everyone,

I am a first time poster here and am trying to see if this is a good diamond for the price. I've seen the diamond in person and it is eye-clean. The cost if the diamond is about $9000. Please let me know what you think. I would really appreciate any comments. I have no idea what I'm doing!!

Hi!
I'm sure one of our seasoned folks will chime in quickly and give far more information than I can give. But perhaps I can get you started.
Price: Using the pricescope search tool, I see that GIA or AGS graded 1.5ct G SI-2 rounds range in price from $9100-$12000, so yours is clearly at the bottom of the range, also yay!
Cut: Have you used the HCA tool before? https://www.pricescope.com/tools/hca.
This is one measure of cut quality, and great performing stones typically have scores under 2.0. Your stone is a 1.8, which is good news. (Also, all scores under 2.0 are *good* scores, this is not a lower-score-is-better-score scenario). The HCA is only one tool you can use to judge cut, so you might want to look into this further. I'll let the others suggest some ways to evaluate cut beyond the HCA.
Color: G + Medium Flour would be very white. Yay!
Clarity: BIG question marks here. SI-2 are sometimes eyeclean but often not. The plot shows lots of things, none of which I feel qualified to comment about. Have you seen this stone? Have you asked about its eye-cleanliness? My *guess* is that the price differences you see between similar stones *may* be due to relative visibility of the inclusions.

Have you seen the stone? What do your eyes tell you?
Also, what specs of stone were you looking for?

Happy hunting!

I'd appreciate any comments! I need to make a decision by Saturday. I just tried the HCA tool and the diamond scored a 1.8. I guess I'm just wondering, does anyone see anything in the GIA report that I should be concerned about? Is there any reason why I shouldn't buy this diamond?

Thank you!!

Hi Tuckie,

Thank you so much for your comments! I really appreciate it. I have seen the diamond in person and it looks eye-clean. Of course, if I hold it up to my eyes, I can see the inclusions, but I don't think I mind that (and I hope no one will stare that closely at my ring, that would be rude lol).

Do you think the feather inclusion would lead to durability issues?

Here is a picture of the diamond.

AN SI2 stone might have durability concerns. I would make sure you have a 7 day FULL REFUND return policy. And take the stone to an independent appraiser (we can help you find one) within that time period.

Hi Gypsy, thank you so much for your input! The diamond is from Ritani and they sent it to my jeweler who said that she would actually pick this diamond over the ones she's already showed me because she can't beat the deal.

Regarding the durability issue, my jeweler said that the feather is "enclosed" in the diamond and does not reach the surface or the girdle (I think that's what she said) and because it's enclosed, it won't get any bigger and won't pose a durability issue. Does anyone know if this comment is true?

Thanks!

Yes the comment is true. And it sounds like your jeweler is a gem. Pun intended. That is very rare. Please appreciate them!!

Hi Gypsy, we just bought the diamond today and I just had to share the pics with you! I love it so much. Now I just have to find a setting for it.

Thank you, SirGuy!

Oh my. That looks fantastic on you!! What a bright stone. And it looks like it's reflecting a lot of colored light, which is fantastic. Do you love it?

And how are you going to set it.

I'm thinking I want a really thin/dainty pave or prong set band around 1.7-1.8 mm in width and a four prong head. I haven't really seen anything I'm in love with in stores that are within our budget. The max we can spend on the ring is $2000. I actually have a few questions if people wouldn't mind giving suggestions!

1. Is a 1.7-1.8 mm band too thin for a 1.50 carat diamond? Does it pose a risk? I've heard some people say yes and others say no. My jeweler suggested this Henri Daussi pave ring in platinum and it's 1.7 mm. I guess if I don't find anything else I like, I'll probably just get this one, but I'm not in love with the claw prongs.

2. What is the difference between 14k and 18k white gold? Do you have to re-dip the 18k more often because it has more gold in it?

3. Is platinum really more durable than white gold?

Any suggestions for rings would be appreciated! Thank you! :))

Do you guys like this ArtCarved ring or the Henri Daussi more?

Thanks everyone!

A gold ring in that width with pave is not going to stand up to wear and tear. And you will have to deal with warping and bending. You need platinum and you need to get close to 2mm or right at 2mm. Don't go thinner than 1.8 even in platinum.

Thank you, Gypsy! I love all of those settings you picked out! What makes these rings higher quality?

I do really like the Artcarved ring I posted above (the picture with my hand in it). The width is exactly 2 mm. Have you heard anything good or bad about Artcarved? What do you think of the style?

Because I know the quality of BGD pieces since I have owned a couple myself, and have louped several of them while I was at BGD, and I know that my stuff from them has always appraised-- with respect to manufacturing quality--as top notch. I've also seen Henry Daussi's quality and I don't find it very impressive. As for art carved, I don't like that setting. The head is attached to the shank strangely. As for their pave pieces. They are okay. I don't think they are nice as the BGD pieces though.
