I have 2 diamonds picked out:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamond.asp?find=1&cid=130&item=1155347

My girlfriend is clear that she will be happy with "whatever I get her"...my sense is that she would love something closer to a 2 carat ring (based on reactions to other women''s rings etc.)

I have gotten feedback that the 2.2 above is a good stone, would like to confirm that the 1.8 is as well.

Then a question (mostly for the women out there) - my concern is that the 2.2 is ostentatious. Will it look gaudy? Should I go a little more modest with the 1.8? Or would she answer to herself, (because she would never say it aloud) Heck no! Give me the 2.2! Women, what is your feedback here ?

Budget isnt really a concern, although if the $5K difference is alot for the difference in weight I''d like the feedback.

Thank you all!

whats her ring size?

Baffled -- this is a very tough question. It''s all a matter of personal taste! And the answer may also depend on her work environment, what her family/friends wear, etc.

My personal choice of the two you''re considering would be the 1.8 ct, but others may say the 2.2. My guess is you''ll get completely mixed responses!

Question that may help people respond -- what setting are you putting this diamond in? Solitaire, sidestones, pave?

yup, even w/o knowing the ring size I agree w/ SYC - you are going to get a mixture of responses all based on personal opinion. So really, you have to decide .. what do YOU think is best?

In my opinion, I think anything over around 1.0 c. looks huge on my gf b/c she has a size 4.5 finger. Others would say a 2 ct. stone on a 4.5 finger is just fine. It''s your call

Great points, her ring size is 6.5.

Set with some pave stones I think its called? I realize its personal taste but I was hoping some folks would share their opinions. Already got some great points to think about i.e. ring size/size of hand and setting. Great feedback! Thanks!

I tried to look at the 2.2 and it''s gone. Did you buy it?

Baffled~

My ring size is the same as your GF''s (6.5) and let me assure you, a 2.2 carat stone would look FABULOUS on my finger!!! I say get the 2.2, if you haven''t already!

I have a 5.5-6, every time i go to try on rings I get so excited and flustered my fingers swell up...haha.

Anyway, I love a big ring and I''m NOT a jewelry girl at all. I wear pearl studs and a watch 95% of the time and thats it. There will be a difference between 1.8 and 2.2, but its not like you are choosing between 1ct and 3 cts. Go with whichever stone "speaks" to you more....sounds silly, but don''t overthink this. As long as both get an ok from the experts around here, just take one last look and pick and be happy with your choice, You FI will be!!!!

Definitely go with the 2.2 - it will look great on a 6.5 finger.

I have gotten feedback that the 2.2 above is a good stone, would like to confirm that the 1.8 is as well.
So actually.... just took a closer look and realized the 2.2 is an AGS 0 and the 1.8 is a GIA certed stone. Since AGS is "tighter" on what constitutes an ideal, AGS0 cut than GIA, that would make me lean towards the 2.2.

Also, running the numbers for both through the HCA, it looks like the 2.2 falls within the Tolkowsky ideal range and has 3 excellents for light return, etc., with a VG for spread. The 1.8 has 2 VGs and 2 EXs.

This wouldn''t eliminate it for me, but for some reason, the proportions of the 1.8 stone fall outside the grid lines that usually mark AGS Ideal and GIA Excellent candidates. My experience has been that beautiful, AGS0 stones usually fall within both grid lines. (Sorry if this explanation is convoluted -- am not an expert on HCA, just know the bare basics!)

So all consideration of size aside, I would guess that the 2.2 ct. stone would be a more beautiful stone.

I am also a 6.5 and my ring is 2.35 cts and I love it and it doesn''t look "too big", just big...but I can never stop staring at it so I say go for it if they are both great quality stones

The 2.2 has sold, so I guess you made your decision?

Personally I think that an elegant lady can carry off anything from no stone to teensy stone to enormo stone with style if it is carried with gentle confidence (not ego).

Also I don''t think a women should be hastily judged by what kind of ring she wears. You never for sure the background of why someone is wearing a particular size. But the fact is some people will make judgments solely based on appearances.

The same ring if it traveled from place to place all over the world could be viewed through different eyes as tiny or medium or huge and really over the top. It really depends on where you are in the world. Opinions on ring size really wildly vary by person and region.

Think about clothing appropriateness- nothing wrong with wearing a bathing suit-but you would get really funny looks if you showed up to a black-tie event in one. Nothing wrong with an evening dress but wearing one for a long day of surfing and swimming at the beach would spell disaster.

So think about appropriateness for your own circumstances.

The great news is that there is something really special about all the different diamond sizes from a tiny glimmering star of a chip, which would be sleek and streamlined to one that would bring to mind the Hope Diamond with a presence you could see from space.

All sizes will have advantages and all sizes will have disadvantages too. There will be people in the world who love or hate any ring size you could possibly pick depending on their own taste.

Get what makes her heart sing and your heart sing to give her that works within your budget and environment. You are very smart to pay attention to her reactions to the rings of other women.

Good luck!

Assuming both diamonds are well cut and beautiful, eyeclean, and *white* (as in, no yellow)... the answer (to me) is always a no-brainer!

BIGGER, babeeeeeeee, BIGGER!!!!

Im talking to them about it so they have it off until I decide. I just got skiddish on the size, so I was thinking if the 1.8 is sufficient maybe I''ll go that direction. Sounds like the 2.2 is a slightly better stone. I just dont want it to be gaudy

Personally I really don''t think that the 2.2 would be gaudy at all. Have you checked out any of the show me the rings threads with that size ring to see what pictures of that size look like on a similar sized hands. I think that that would help a lot. There is also a finger coverage percentage chart that might be helpful that shows what % different carats take up on different size fingers.

Hopefully you''re the one who bought the 2.2

I would definitely say go with the 2.2 but that''s because I''m in the camp of "there''s no such thing as too big" but mainly because it''s AGS

Hi Baffled -- objectively, I think a 2.2 would be beautiful on a size 6.5 finger. Did you see these pics of a 2.39 ct ring? It looks like the setting you''re thinking of, and it''s GORGEOUS!

https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/2-39-j-si1-in-shared-prong-setting-from-wf.90393/

But if you''re still feeling concerned, maybe tell us what city you live in, what general size of ring women wear among your family/friends, and what your gf does, and that will help us give personal opinions?

What''s considered "tasteful" is so subjective. I really don''t think a 2.2 ct would be gaudy, but I do think it may not be practical in certain settings. In my case, I did feel I shouldn''t wear a ring that was too big because I work in a fairly conservative environment. Personally, I did feel that a diamond in the 2 ct range on my hand (size 4 1/4) might be a bit distracting in my work environment.

Maybe you should just ask your girl what she wants. Desire of the diamond size and style of the ring are highly personal and subjective. I am a loner in my camp -- you won''t hear me say "GO BIGGER BABY," because I think anything that covers more than 2/3 of the finger looks gaudy and ostentatious (especially when set high and/or put into highly ornate settings). I know the people who love big rings don''t think that, and believe that an elegant person can carry it off with grace. But I can assure you that not everyone viewing your ring will be thinking along those lines. I''m only stating my views because you specifically asked. My feelings are strictly my own and in no way right nor wrong. But maybe you should just ask your girl to be on the safe side -- after all, she''s the one who will have to wear it in private AND in the public!

RxTech, you know you''re not alone in that many people here think there''s such a thing as too big, or cartoonish, as I like to say. However, that size depends on what size the woman''s hands/fingers are. A 2ct. on a size 3 hand would look gigantic, while a 2ct. on a size 8 finger doesn''t look huge at all. It''s all relative.

Dude, ask your lady what she''d prefer. It''s not worth guessing over as it''s a huge purchase.

I vote for the 2.2.
Mine is about 1.8, and I wonder how much of a difference is the 2.2? Not even half of a milimetre in diameter? Does it really make that much of a difference..I would think not..but I still vote for the bigger one of the two!

6.5 finger- 2.2 for sure!!!! Especially considering it is the better stone!

2.2 and I like that stone better independently of size!!!!

If you''re worried it will look too big, give it time!!!! Over the years, she will not think it is too big for long. I don''t think so, at least. 1.8 is also a wonderful size, so you can''t go wrong... but I say go 2.2!!!!!!!!

WOW her! I was WOWed and got quickly used to the size. We got a huge plasma TV and at first it looked too big... the images on screen were gigantic. Over time, it didn''t seem so big and now it seems just right. Other TVs look small now. It''s all relative.

The 2.2 on the website says sold.

Congrats

2.2!!!! If she reacts to other womens'' big rings, but is not specifically asking for one herself, she probably doesn''t want to sound greedy. I would never in a million years have asked for a two carat ring, but if given one, would be THRILLED!!! I also agree the AGS is more likely to be a stunner, as I am the owner of a not so well cut GIA excellent.
On the other hand, it does (at least a little) depend on where you live and what you do for work. I live in a smallish town and people think my 1.44 is enormous. I think the size is perfect of course and likely your gf will too with the 2.2, but it might be good to try and find out for sure

IMO, Go with the 2.2, but keep it simple as in a solitaire or elegant simple halo. Her ring size being 6.5, I think a 2 and 1/4 carat ring will look spectacular.

GO BIG! She will love it!

Check to make sure the clouds are not an issue in the bigger stone, which they should not be, considering the clarity. If all is good, then go for the larger stone for her 6.5 finger. She will be thrilled!

Julianna, JA's gemologist is awesome and will give you the straight answers about these stones that you need.

Too big??? That''s crazy talk!

No, there isn''t too big for diamonds! They both sound like lovely stones. I''d pick the bigger one for sure and I''d lay odds that your future wife will be happy you chose the bigger one too!
