Is there something wrong with The Demon?

Sending hugs to the Demon! I think that you''re doing the right thing bringing him to the new vet next week. As you said, if he has another shaking in the mean time, bring him to the old vet. It could be that he was just reacting to the weather!!

Absolutely, that should put your mind at rest which is a great thing, hopefully he was just reacting to the weather or something only he could detect. I know how I panic when it is one of my babies!

Aww DJ and Demon. This is tough. We just got back from the vet -- we''re thrilled with them (and the animal hospital we use). Let me know if you want the information. Poor thing.

Al, The Demon does absolutely freak out during thunder storms. He''ll somehow get himself into a bathtub or our stand-up shower and sit there an shake. It''s interesting you say that your previous dog would be reacting to the storm before you would even notice it; one of our signs that a storm is coming is that one of us will go, ''Where''s The Demon?'' and when we find him in some strange den-like place we know we''re going to have some weather soon.

Dee, not surprised. Brittany (my last dog) would end up nudging at me, whining, and cowering a bit. She absolutely tried to find a den-like secure place when she was alone during storms.

I felt SO bad because it got to the point where I''d be at work when an afternoon thunderstorm would roll through, and I''d be all distracted and worried about how she was handling it but couldn''t do the 30-min drive home to check in on her.

Oddly enough, she wasn''t like that in her younger years......she didn''t develop this fear until she was somewhere around 6 or 7? I don''t recall her getting too freaked out about it prior to then, but I suppose she must have endured a really horrific loud storm once when I wasn''t home and it must have stayed with her thereafter.

She passed away in 2001, and I STILL think of her when a sudden thunderstorm comes up. Probably always will.

This just reminded me... my mom used to breed Samoyeds and when I was about 5, we had a large male Samoyed named Timmy. He was 65 pounds if he was an ounce. And he was terrified of thunder. We were out at the lake one Saturday and someone had left the kitchen windows open with just the screens over them. Timmy lived in a dog pen in the yard with 4 female Samoyeds who were apparently less afraid because he left them behind when he tunneled out of his pen, ripped the screen off the window and tucked himself onto the sofa, covered in mud, to get away from the big bad thunder. We had to get a new sofa and my dad built a new wing onto the dog pen so that Timmy could sleep in the workshop when the weather was scary and we weren''t home.

Al, it''s funny you say that about worrying when you weren''t home and bad weather would roll through. I used to sit in my office, which was on the 34th floor and I had a view of the entire west/north/east sky. I would just *know* that The Demon was having a bad time of it when I could see the clouds building. Now I''m home more in the day so hopefully it won''t be as much of an issue, but oh, the angst! I would sometimes call and talk to him on the answering machine during storms. (Yes, I know, I''m a nut!)

Sum, LOL on Timmy! And BTW, NO MORE super cute pics of Bossy''s pups in your other thread. You''re killing me!

I hope that the Demon is feeling better. If it does turn out to be epilepsy, it may not be so bad -- we had a Brittany with epilepsy when I was growing up, and he was otherwise healthy and lived a long, happy life.

I''d do exactly the same thing.

It''s funny how it stays with you long after they are gone. I cannot have an unexpected summer thunderstorm roll through without thinking of her now.

Ooh, sending good thoughts Demon''s way! I''m sure he''s fine, or it''s something easily treatable that isn''t the first thing that pops up on the internet.
I''m just saying that it''s our nature to worry about the worst case when it comes to our beloved fur-babies, but it''s usually something not serious.

(case in point, I thought my 15 yr old cat had cancer but it was actually just giardia!)


Oh, and most certainly you should trust your instinct on your old vet! Monster dog''s original vet kept telling me he had ''growing pains''. Of course Monster dog also growled at the vet so he wouldn''t actually touch him! I finally took him to a new, much nicer female vet who said Monster dog had bone chips in his elbows the size of peas!

Growing pains my a$$!

deejay, just checking in for an update on The Demon...when''s he supposed to head to the vet?

OK, so the new vet finally got back in town and her "unofficial" assessment is that there''s probably nothing at all wrong with The Demon. She said that since he is known to be sensitive to the weather it would not suprise her at all if he was reacting to things happening above the lowest cloud level that people just couldn''t sense. Also, it is a good sign that he was totally responsive; i.e., he got up and walked around both time and even took a treat the second time. If he was truly having some type of seizure he would not have been able to respond like that.

So, long story short, we''re just supposed to watch him and if he has any more incidents for which there is no good explanation we will take him in, but she hates to subject hm to a slew of tests unnecessarily (and I do agree with that).

Thank you all VERY MUCH for your wisdom and comfort over this!!
