Hello...

So, things are getting down to the wire in terms of purchasing a stone for my engagement ring. I am heading for a site visit to Good Old Gold next week to look at some stones in person - really looking forward to that!

The setting that I want is by Tacori and is meant to accomodate at minimum an 8.7mm diameter stone. By my estimations, in a round brilliant that would be something in the 2.4 and up carat range.

What I am wondering is - is there any such thing as a stone that''s ''too big'' to be practical for daily wear? I realize that this is perhaps a bit of a skewed audience to ask this of, but although I am rife with the excitement of having a beautiful ring that I love, I want to be able to wear it without feeling as if it''s getting ''in the way''.

FYI I have fairly long fingers, sz. 5.5 approximately.

Any feedback would be most appreciated!

Thank you.

Have you tried on a ring with the approximate stone size that you mention? I think it''s all about your personal comfort level, and I think it helps to actually try something on and gauge from that way.

Good luck!

I have tried on a 2.4 ct, which I loved the look of. I''m just wondering what it would be like to wear while doing, you know, ''daily life stuff''... I know that it''s a pretty subjective question.

Nope.

BTW, I wear almost 7 carats on a daily basis. My fingers are long and the ring is[are] a size 4. Most people would find this hard to believe but after 12 years, shrinkage has taken its toll so I could go bigger. LOL!

i think it''s whatever you feel comfortable wearing. there are gals here with size 3 fingers and over 3 carat rings that they were everyday. go with what you love and what you would wear.

HI:

I think "size" is one of the most debated issues on this forum--if you were to use the search function your yield might be hundreds of opinions......btw, my ER is 6.12 ctw, and I wear it daily.

cheers--Sharon

Wear what is comfortable for you. My center stone is 2.36, and love that size for me. Have fun at GOG next week, you''ll have to report back to us!!!

There are many on here who wear that size and bigger on a daily basis, and I''ve not heard anyone compliaining. It would take a little getting used to, you most likely would knock it in the beginning. That''s not unusual, even with much smaller stones.

One thing that would help is having a lower setting. The higher up the diamond sits, the more potential there is to bang it.

And can I just say, lucky you!! You actually get to go to GOG. You are in for a treat!

I doubt that there is anything too big for daily wear - since I take off my rings to do anything like cleaning etc.

I''m sure you can get used to any size. For me personally, 2 cts is as big as I''d be comfortable with because at 1.77 I''m already finding I have to take my ring off more often than I''d hoped to prevent mucking it up. You may have a comfort level of 3+cts, who knows? Enjoy!

To me, you can have a fairly small stone & have it hard to wear if it is set "high" as it knocks and catches on things. I have a 8.7mm (see avatar) & have no trouble chasing 3 children. It is set pretty low, which really helps.

I''d say try them on for size and see what seems comfortable. Personnaly I don''t go bigger than 2 ct in a RB on a size 7 finger, but that''s just me. I have stubby fingers so not much real estate to show off the big stones

I am of the opinion that there is such a thing as too big. You do have tiny fingers, too. I have a size 6.5 finger and for me I would top out at 2.5ct anything bigger would be impractical for me (not that I HAVE a 2.5ct, but that''s where I think my personal max is)

Dunno if that helps. Just my $.02.

I don''t think there is such a thing as too big. I also have long fingers and wear a 5.25, and I know I could easily wear a 2.4 carater on a daily basis. (I currently have a 1.5 carat radiant in a halo, so with the halo it''s probably around 8.7 mm on each side. It wouldn''t bother me at all to have no halo and all diamond!

I think it''s more of a matter of a mental comfort level. Some people think larger diamonds are ostentatious and don''t want to appear that way. I think larger diamonds are awesome and I would LOVE to have a bigger diamond!

If you get a lower setting and insurance, then you don''t have to worry about knocking the ring too much. And if something did happen to it, your insurance would allow you to replace it easily.

There''s definitely such a thing as a stone that''s set too high to be practical, in my opinion. I''d be more concerned with how high off your finger the diamond sat than its carat weight, per se.

That said, for me at least, there is definitely such a thing as too big. It largely depends on your age, your social circle, your upbringing, where/if you work, and your daily activities. I can think of reasons why I''d not want to wear more than about 1.5 carat, in terms of my lifestyle. You could always consider eternity bands, stackable rings, and other ways to add flash to your look without going larger on a single stone.

I agree that it is all about what you are comfortable with. For me, I would probably be happy at 1.25-1.50 and that would be plenty big enough. Personal preference!

LOL!!!!!

I used to think that a 2 carat stone would be plenty big enough for me. However I now find myself wearing a 2.52 ct with a halo and side stones. Initially I felt like it was huge but now it''s a perfectly comfortable size. It''s set low so doesn''t knock into anything. It''s all about individual comfort levels.

Have fun at GOG. Where the size you like and feels comfortable; I can''t wait to see your ring.

My first e-ring was a 0.21 ct solitaire. I wore that baby everywhere, 24/7. No problems at all. My current diamond ring is 1.5 ct. I take it off for housework, flying, exercise class, camping, gardening, sleeping, bathing, etc. So, I recently got a 0.50 ct diamond ring to wear in the summer when I am more active with outdoor activities, and I find that it is just as wearable as the little guy I started with.

So it all depends on your lifestyle, and your activities. Good luck!!

No way!! Another vote from a size-whore!! I wear my 3ct practically everywhere, except when I''m doing housework or going to the gym. I''ve had mine set very low and because of that, it hasn''t been a problem at all.

If door knobs get missed, you''re definitely not even CLOSE to being TOO big....

Hi,

If you''re comfortable and love the 2.4 size, then go for it! For practicality purposes, you can always get a simple wedding band to wear for activities like gardening, housework, or even when going on vacation.

Hi

You could always get a costume ring (something cheap and fake) in approx size and setting, and wear it around the house to for few days to see how it feels and get used to it.

I have been doing this with trying to see what size earings I want to get.

Good luck

Exactly what I was going to suggest.

I've been doing that to help choose a setting. Personally, there is a max. size limit for me. I don't know what that limit is, but I would know it when I had it on my finger.

L's for love.

I agree that there are stones that are too big for daily wear, but they are in the Smithsonian!! Seriously though, a 2.4 carat stone is very comfortable to wear daily. I thyink it is only when you get to the really HUge stones that it is an issue. 2.4 carats is an important looking stone without being ostentatious and will not get in the way of daily activity. GO FOR IT!

I do not think that a 2.4 carat stone is too big to wear everyday. But it also depends where you live and your lifestyle. I am orginally from New York, so almost no size is too big to wear in New York. However, now I live in Europe (Athens, Greece) and you don''t see too many rings over a carat.

Hi,

This really is your personal decsion, we have clients that are very happy with 5 carat rings and others
that feel 0.60pts is big. What ever you feel ok with is right. Just dont sacrifice quality for weight.

Kind Regards

Paul
