Is there a measurement size you won't go under?

I see some very pretty sapphires that are about 3-4mm in length. Wondering if their size is worth their cost (usually $500ish) and size. They're so tiny.

And also, would you never buy a gem smaller than a certain length?

In colored diamonds that size can be very costly, so why not in well colored sapphires, they, too, are rare.

There's no way of knowing their value without knowing other specs besides measurements. But I generally don't wear a solitaire in anything under 6mm. I have largish fingers, and smaller stones accentuate that. But I'll happily collect smaller stones for a five stone or cluster piece.

It depends. A small stone could be used in stackable band or in a design that has multiple gemstones of different colour.
It also depends on the setting. I could make a Gypsy setting for a small stone that provide sufficient finger coverage.
A 5mm band is the smallest width that I would wear on its own on my chunky fingers.
DK :))

The Winza ruby in my avatar ring is 4.0 mm, and my color change garnet is 4.7mm. Below a certain size, even with size 5 fingers, I start wanting a halo or more sidestones. So it would depend on what the gem was, and how rare. But the halos, etc., get expensive very fast, so I tell myself I’m not going to save any money by going too small. I think 6-7 mm is a very wearable size for a solitaire.

Try cutting out a little piece of a post it note in the stone’s mm and sticking it on your finger. That will give you a good idea.
