if a stone is already mounted (w/ prongs, so pavillion is still relatively open), what methods are available to measure angles?

if sarin is not an option, are there any other ways that the angles could at least be estimated?

thanks.

No if the stone is set you will not get accurate numbers at all. *maybe* percentages but I don't even know if that would be possible. Plus %'s are nowhere as accurate as angles as we all know.

Well, according to a diamond cutting book I just read, if you take it to a cutter, they have various gauges that measure angles fairly accurately. Not sure how well that would work in a setting, but you could ask. Not sure how you could find a cutter in an area that is convenient for you, unless you live in L.A. or NY. Also, some appraisers may be familiar with a technique. Perhaps one of the appraisers that frequent PS might comment?

anyone have any other info on this?

thanks.

If your appraiser has the DiamCalc software, he can come up with pretty accurate measurements using a combination of direct measurement and DiamCalc computations, correlating it with a simulated IdealScope image verus actual IdealScope image for confirmation.

An appraiser using a ProportionScope or Microscope Proportion Analyzer can come fairly close as well.
