Actually...if it can drastically benefit humanity, yes. I am. It doesn''t sound like Premarin does that. But I put human life above all other forms of life on the planet, so if we needed mare''s urine for, say, curing cancer, I''d be all for it. Would I like to see people helped with herbal homeopathic remedies and changes in diet? Heck yes. Would I prefer a synthetic drug be used? Yes. But for the women that ONLY Premarin helps, I think it should be available. It just shouldn''t be the first go-to drug.

princess - I DO agree in a sense with you, but not under those conditions. I would be comfortable with it IF the mares were treated humanely.

Like I said before, I'd much prefer synthetic strains of the drug be developed, and that in the meantime, the US put some standards on animal-care into place (the Canadian Premarin farm that one poster mentioned sounded quite different from what your post describes). But, like Princess said ... when it comes down to the question between caring for people vs. other species, the people come first.

And, as mentioned before, this isn't "just" a question of convenience or comfort (which, frankly, sounds both silly and unsympathetic: if herbal remedies and moderation work for some, that is *wonderful* ... but it doesn't mean they'll will work for everyone, hence, the drugs). It can also be the difference between excruciating pain and a normal life, or between infertility and the ability to someday bear children. Let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater, maybe? Reject the animal cruelty, but not the necessity of a drug with the effects that Premarin grants.

I am an animal advocate and an animal lover and I detest animal cruelty under any grounds.

However, that being said, I just want to mention that in the hospital where I work, I have seen many very young women (n their 20''s or 30''s) have to undergo complete hysterectomies (including removal of both ovaries) for such conditions as severe endometriosis, ovarian cancer, etc.

To tell these very young women, who have just had the trauma of instant surgical menopause thrust upon them, to just "suck it up" or "get over it" is IMHO non-productive and insensitive.

Again agreed. I just think that there needs to be a standard of care for the animals as well. The mares should have at LEAST 10 by 10 stall space with AT LEAST two to three hours turn out every day. They should have ample food and water (in at least the form of roughage like hay). And again, I''d like to see a move towards using the mares to produce USEFUL foals who have a goal beyond the slaughter house.

What would be more ideal than that even for me would be to see them finding a way to channel the herbal extracts.....
