Is ok to use Holloway Cut Adviser with data of ideal diamond

Hey guys,

I´ve been looking for a diamond for my fiancé,

And I found this Holloway Cut Adviser and a Data base from http://www.gemnation.com/base?processor=getPage&pageName=cut that tells you the proportions media of well known ideal cuts.

So I tought, what if I check online for diamonds and advanced the search with only the proportions that only ideal cuts diamonds have.

And I noticed that I found two diamonds that matches ideal cuts proportions and also matches Holloway Cut Adviser grading both diamonds same!!!

There is way so much difference in price!! more than $1K.
Difference I saw is one diamond is SI1 while the other one is SI2 and also one is GIA and the other is AGS?


Can somebody help me? If I am doing it in the right way…
Should I go for the Brian Gavin Select?

I am not going to tell you which diamond to buy, but the round system on that site does not work. You can find as many bad diamonds as good ones using it.
And I bet you can never find any diamond with pavilion depths of the e.g.'s of the deep and shallow stones. Ever.

Mostly I think you need to understand the difference between the 2 stones you have selected. The in house BG stone (the Si1) comes with a lot of performance information and an upgrade policy. It is a stone that is in BG's branded line that he has specially cut. You are paying more for each of these things and have to decide if that is worth it to you.

The other stone (the BG Select SI 2) is a stone that would have to be called in for them to look at. It is not in house and is not part of his brand and also not included in the upgrade policy (should you ever find yourself wanting to upgrade later).

Another thing that is influencing the price difference is the BG one is SI1 and the Select one is SI2.

Look only at Brian Gavin Signature and Brian Gavin Blue stones. Those are the ones they have had specially cut and have in stock. You do not need to use the HCA on ideal cut stones.

Also, that BG Select SI2 diamond only comes with a GIA Dossier, not a full GIA report with an inclusion plot. The cutters or vendors get a Dossier instead of a full report because a Dossier is cheaper than a full report, and the price of it includes engraving the GIA number on the stone. But diamonds are identified by their inclusions, and trying to buy a diamond over the Internet without a full report is nuts. The Dossier is like telling the customer "It has these inclusions, but we're not going to tell you where." But "where" is important. A feather near the girdle can cause a piece of the diamond to break off. A dark crystal in the table area is most likely going to be seen under some circumstances. A big blob in the table of an SI2, and most people would immediately know that stone will not be eyeclean. "Where" the inclusion is, is very important to know.

But the recent trend around here is for all diamonds under 1ct to get a Dossier and not a report with an inclusion report. I say this makes buying a diamond online about 4 times more tedious than it used to be, back when they were all listed with full reports. Now, you have to go pester the vendor for lots of information about where are the inclusions and how big and how eyeclean is the stone and whatnot. It's ridiculous. I hope that the PS vendors get bombarded with questions and wind up refusing to list stones that don''t have full reports available online. This Dossier thing is just wasting everyone's time.

Save yourself some trouble and only consider diamonds with a full report. I've already said in another thread that if a vendor wants to sell me a diamond, it WILL come with a full report, or no deal. AGS graded stones are the first thing I look for. Then I look at GIA.

I do not necessarily agree TC - that all dossiers are bad, but I would never buy an SI2 where the grade maker is a cloud (the first mentioned inclusion). It is almost a certainty that this stone will suffer reduced brilliance.
