In my area, there are a lot of advertisements for people to bring in their old gold jewelry to get cash. Many local jewelry stores are doing it. I believe the jewelry is melted down for the gold content. There are even home parties that do this.

I have a lot of gold from the 80s that I haven''t worn in more than 10 years. I have some things like the flat herringbone chains and some small gold pendants. They are currently consuming space in my jewelry box. I can''t decide if I will ever wear them again. But assuming I decide I won''t, is it worth it to look into the old gold to cash places or is there a better option?

You''ll get more for them if you sell them as jewelry rather than scrap: I sold a heavy gold setting (I just wanted to get it OUT of my house) for $60. It was probably worth more than that, but it just wasn''t worth investing any effort into it for me: $60 bucks buys enough books to outweigh the bad juju I associated with it. Instead, you might consider consigning them, or selling them on eBay - more hassle, but also more money.

I tried selling my old stuff on ebay and actually had very poor results. I ended up taking it in and using the gold as a credit for my reset - I got $150 for 3 old rings and a necklace. It''s worth investigating. If after you ask you think you could get more on ebay - go for it.

Well.....the rule of thumb with clothing is that if you haven''t worn it in the last year, get rid of it.

Jewelry, for the most part is clothing accessories, so I imagine it would follow similarly. 10 years is a long time and I would prolly sell it

JMHO and YMMV........

I did what geckodani did. I gathered up all of my old pieces and the jeweler applied it toward bezel setting a stone for a pendant. All my scrap pieces and a loose stone gave me a beautiful new necklace!

I sold quite a bit of gold within the past couple months while gold was high. Jewelry that I bought for $12/gram, I was able to sell for $25/gram. Nobody knows what will happen, but it''s been coming down recently. If you are considering selling, in my opinion, now is the time to do it.
