Just wondering because the stone I found graded by GIA can be graded slightly better in clarity in my opinion. The saleswoman just said that "particular" group that graded the stone then must be harsh on its grading therefore giving it a slightly lower grade. The reason I ask is because the clarity (VS1) I feel can be bumped up to a VVS2.

Here's the spec of the stone.

Round Brilliant
7.62x7.64x4.62
1.617
F
VS1 (2-3 points on the outer edge of the stone)
Sym: Ex
Polish: VG
Depth 60.6
Table 56
Crown Angle: 35
Pavil Angle: 40.7
Flou: None
Thickness: Med.
Culet: 0.4

Thanks in advance

of course it can be regraded. i don''t know why you would want it regraded though. you can''t see vs inclusions without magnification and you can''t physically change the inclusions, only the paper they''re plotted on.

Why would you want it regraded? If it came back as a VVS1 than the saleswoman could just tack a whole lot more onto the price. Much better to have a stone graded worse than it really is because then the price will be much better...

I have to agree with the groom here. If you just want to have it regraded by GIA, wait till after you buy it. Then you have "made" money on the purchase.

I assumed he meant he was going to wait till after he bought it, so that he''d have a better grade diamond if he wanted to resell it later.

The only problem with that would be that not many people seem to be in the market for a VVS2 diamond, so he wouldn''t make the difference between the two at retail because no one would be beating a path to his door to buy that sort of quality second-hand.

An alternative would be to have the diamond graded by a different lab. It might come back IF at one of the less particular firms

Of course I was asking if it''s possible to be regraded by GIA AFTER THE FACT of purchasing it. I wouldn''t want to be spending more if it came back better clarity than what it is now =P

Yeah, that makes sense. I assumed that you would want to be sure that it reappraised as a VVS2 by GIA before buying it. What if you do if you bought it, sent it out, and it was graded again as a VS1 by GIA? Would you mind?

How does one go about getting it regraded through GIA again? Do they charge for it?

You need to deliver it to either the lab in California or the lab in New York. They are currently taking about 4 weeks, plus shipping time. Expect it to cost about $200. Info at www.gia.edu.

Jewelers get a token discount so you may be better off using a local jeweler to ship it in. It can save you some headaches.
