Is it possible for a Medium Blue to appear yellow and not blue?

I bought a diamond with medium blue fluorescence according to the GIA cert. It appears more yellow than blue (I don''t see any blue) in most lighting conditions It''s a colorless diamond (E color). Could the medium blue fluorescence actually be yellow? How likely is GIA to have made this mistake? I have yet to see it in direct sunlight, but it has a yellow glare in fluorescent lighting.

Buy a black light and go into a dark room and play with the stone. It should glow blue then.

Else something is wrong with the stone and you did not get what you bought. Did you have it independently appraised?

I''ve only ever seen one diamond with yellow fluor before. It was - definitely unique!

I''ll have a look in the morning under direct sunlight and then black light. Even if it appears blue, why does it have a yellow hue under fluorescent lighting? Odd. Yes, I had it appraised by a pricescope listed appraiser in CA.

probably the fluor lighting has yellowish tinge, maybe they are old or lower temp lights? Fluor lights should be be outputing significant UV rays as that means it is not efficient in converting the UV rays into visible spectrum.

Is the room yellow? Are you wearing a yellow shirt? Is the cieling taupe? Diamonds reflect the colors around them a lot and many a PSer has come here worried about their "yellow" diamond only to learn about this aspect of diamond performance.

Flor will *only* show up in bright sunlight, no other lighting condition.

If it is an E by GIA there is no chance in this world that it is tinted. It is most definitely environmental color reflection.

There is no yellow in the environment whatsoever. Under various lighting conditions that involve UV light, it glows yellow in the same way my other medium blue glows blue. The GIA report clearly says Medium Blue for fluorescence tho. I shall see tomorrow in direct sunlight.

Fluorescence can be a tricky thing. To some degree there can be a difference of opinion in the actual color of it. I have had many conversations with diamond graders looking at the same diamond together with differing opinions as to whether it is yellow or blue. Blue is generally the default choice. When a diamond has a chalky or turbid appearance it can make a blue fluorescent diamond appear somewhat yellow. But a true yellow fluorescent diamond is quite rare, especially in a colorless diamond. I would guess the most likely scenario is the one I described above, but in any case if you like the look of the diamond then all is well.

Also most light sources have some uv content which can cause the fluorescence to become visible, especially in a diamond with medium or stronger fluorescence.

I hope this helps and good luck.

The diamond does not have the cloudy appearance that strong blues sometimes have. The flourescence has no impact on the stone in non-UV light sources. GIA described the fluorescence as Medium Blue, but the vendor only used the term Medium. The Appraised said Medium Blue. She didn''t seem to pay much attention to the fluorescence, and didn''t grade it blind. Anxiously awaiting daylight.

It''s BLUE in direct sunlight! Very relieved. It must have been the color of the lighting reflecting off the table.

P.S. I have a feeling that yellow fluorescence is ugely bogely.
