Is it possible for a GIA Very Good Cut to receive an AGS Ideal Cut?

Brand new member here. This site has been invaluable to me as I have lurked trying to educate myself. I''ve been told something by a jeweler designer that just doesn''t seem plausible to me but thought I would go to the experts for their answer.

I have a copy of the certificate for a diamond that is currently graded as a GIA Very Good Cut with Excellent Polish and Symmetry. I would like to have an AGS Ideal Cut stone instead and was told that this stone could be submitted to AGS and would most probably receive an Ideal Grade.

Since it did not even receive a GIA Excellent Cut, I just don''t see how it would ever receive an AGS Ideal Cut Grade. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Nup, she is taking you for a ride.

If she still stands by this, ask her to submit the stone for certification by AGS at her cost, and if it comes back as Ideal, then you will purchase the stone and pay for the report. In other words, it''s not gonna happen.

You are better to look for a stone that is already graded by AGS and work from there.

I''m no expert Jillian, but that sounds weird to me too. Would love to hear about what others will say about your question.

Do you think maybe he was just trying to sell you this specifc stone (because he was desperate)? If he''s a reputable jeweller then maybe there is some truth to what he is saying... but if he''s not, then I''d be cautious.

Jillian, since you didn''t supply the details, not that he needs confirmation, but Garry is absolutely correct.

That said, without those details to confirm, I''ll say the greater likelihood is with the others here. Though some proportion sets (a lesser number) make GIA VG and AGS0, even these can''t nearly be guaranteed to get AGS'' zero when submitted, so the advice to be conservative, and seek a zero to get a zero, is probably prudent.

Yap, it is possible but also dependent on the exact proportion of each facets. If you give us all the physical parameters we could guess if it is possible more accurately but still a guess based on average and rounded numbers.

Jillian there is no real way to tell and just because the proportions might fall within AGS0 range does not mean AGS would actually award this diamond an AGS0 cut grade if they were to evaluate it.

Not to ask a silly question but if you what an AGS-ideal stone, why not just ask her to get you an AGS-ideal instead of trying to guess how one will come out if you send it in?

Yes it is possible.

Excellent charts Garry.

Nutshell version: GIA is more conservative on shallow angled combos while AGS is more conservative on steep angled combos. Each lab also has different tolerances for other factors like painting & digging and possibly also lower half and star lengths.

Which standard is better?
AGS GOLD 2008 or AGS PGS?

AGS PGS is better.

AGS GOLD report is based just on proportion factor similar to GIA while PGS does simulation on the actual scan of the stone to determine the light performance.

Also, in my experience, more often than not, GIA VG or EX polish = AGS Ideal polish.
