Is it me? Or are there not many 3cts around??

I *may* be getting an upgrade? Not expected.. but when hubby suggests... I must at least "look around".

But I see that there not many around.. is that your experience? I guess I noticed less available stones in the 2ct range when I got this one last year...

Is it just a supply demand thing (not as much demand for larger stones) - or is it just really rarer to find a good quality piece of rough.. or may be combo.. larger rough is cut smaller because higher resale.

oh well. .just curious...

There really was not an abundance of 3+ ct rounds when I went looking (which is why I ended up with my "temporary" stone) so I feel your pain. My advice would be to look early and often because when that right one comes along snap it! If we're all out there looking for the perfect stone they won't stay around long once they do pop up!

Also, why not contact the PS vendors and let them know what you're looking for? That way you can get the inside track on anything good that meets your specs.

you are right there are hardly any 3c''s out there...i would definitely alert your vendor who you have trade-in with that you are looking and have them keep their eye out. it could take a while though and you may only have one or two stones to choose from rather than a bunch to select. keep us posted!!!

LOL. Seriously I was only teasing. He was like.. ok.. sure! (he NEVER does that!) His reasoning was since I broke my first "perfect" diamond (remember shopping cart incident).. that this one is just replaceable... LOL

I personally have to get over the $$$ this is going to cost. I''m the one saying... well.. we should wait. Then I realize it must be pregnancy hormones that have made me delerious to almost turn down a rock that size.

I have lots of time to look. I just was shocked that there were so few anywhere...

oh trust me i hear you on the cost thing...every time i try to convince myself it won't be 'that bad' to go from my stone to a 3c+ stone (and it would have to be like 3.30c i decided, at least!)...i look around out there and get mega sticker shock!! insane costs. so i don't even know if i could stomach it. i keep thinking wow that's like a month in tahiti or something. is it really worth it?!

congrats by the way!!! we have a few pregnant PS'ers around here. oh and Greg was joking recently as well that i can upgrade to my 3c+ stone when i birth a boy child, but the catch is it has to be one he LIKES. as in a well-behaved son. i said well what about a girl?! and then i said, well wait a minute, how do you know if you like the child?! catch 22. so i will have to continue to work on him, i like the whole 'incentive to bear' thing. HAH!

When I was shopping locally for my upgrade, I saw quite a few 3+ carat stones; AGS, GIA, HRD certed, you name it. I was pleased as I thought the selection in (my) town was rather good.....happy shopping!

My local B&M has in stock, right now, 7 stones that are all over 3ct. But I guess being close to NYC and working in the city, a 3ct stone isn''t really that rare around here. I see them daily walking around the downtown area. Plus since all the stones in the USA come through NYC maybe the father away you are the less likely you are to see them in the shops. Who knows! Good lucky hunting. BTW, I assume you''re looking for a round because you didn''t mention a shape? I would think that it would be harder to find a 3ct stone in a fancy shape.

There gonna have to gosh darn try to get a 3ct in here! LOL. They changed the head a bit for the 2ct, so I assume they can make it bigger to a 3. They do custom work, so I think they''ll be able to handle it. I still love my set.

I''m in NY too.. I guess I just prefer to shop the internet vendors.. I found it hard in the shops to find many H&A stones (yes I''m looking for a RB), with great angles. Lots there.. but not lots in that category. Oh, yeah, plus I kinda like my vendor..

Yeah... I need to figure out what this magic potion is.. so that I may use it for other..oh wait.. use it for "good"...

I''m shopping for an e-ring, and while playing around on bluenile.com, I found an 8c(!) stone for something like $450,000. They also have quite a few 3''s.

You should really starting looking for your upgrade now.

Once the baby arrives, it is so hard to justify spending money on yourself. Children are expensive....increasingly so as they get older.

So treat yourself to that upgrade now....especially when DH has given you the green light!

3 CT. stones are awesome. My new finace'' loves hers. It''s really a conversation piece. People see it and there like whoa !!!!!!!
It is a perfectly eye clean stone and we both love it. Cut is good not perfect but we had to sacrifice somewhere for the size !!
Anyway, we like it because it is different there are not a lot of people with a stone that large.

*heh* congratulations! Hubby is also upgrading my rock and wedding set. I also had a little bit of difficulty getting over the cost, and how to justify it at the moment, given that we''re having a baby soon plus a lot of other expenses like building a house, putting in a pool etc etc, but I got over that very quickly

There are few people able to afford a 3 carat diamond and DeBeers and others are smart enough to keep the supply tight enough to keep the value in the stones being offered. It is not pure supply and demand, since diamonds are reasonably controlled on the supply side.

Hmm Interesting and very true comment I suppose.

The prices are varing so widely at that size for well cut stones. It seems even more so than say at the 1 ct range or even 1.5. Say an average to nice well cut 1ct is 10K.. and 2ct is aroudn 20K a 3 is definately more than 30k.... so I guess that last chunk is *really* expensive! LOL.
