Or do solitaire''s that sit up higher look larger? Originally I didn''t like that idea of a tall setting (for fear of it getting caught on things or hitting stuff). But now that I''ve seen higher setting I think they really excentuate the diamond. Thoughts?

Yes, they often do.

Not just you, I think so too! I''m not a fan of low as possible settings for that reason..

I think it is a bit ''chicken and egg''...

A larger stone sits higher naturally because it is proportionallydeeper than a smaller stone - of equal cut. So larger stones sit higher, I wonder then by raising the setting is the eye fooled to think it is a bigger stone?

I wanted the highest setting possible when I started looking; for the same reasons, but once I found my dream stone my priority became the security of my stone. I have the WF tiffany replica and it could be higher for me personally but I feel my stone is snug as a bug and going nowhere.

Neah, it''s not just you. My good friend has a princess that''s set pretty high, with fairly subtantial prongs that lift that baby up and add some dimension to her ring and it looks pretty bodacious.

its an optical illision...a stone that sits higher appears larger, thats why alot of mall jewelers tend to have solitaire settings that sit high.

I think it does look larger - also, since the diamond looks more separate from the setting, your eye is drawn to the stone, and a lot more light gets in, too. I know it showcases the stone more, but every time I see a solitaire sitting high, I think how it must snag on everything! Mine is pretty low, but it took me awhile to get used to. I got it caught on so much stuff.

Alright, so next question: Do you think it is worth it to get a solitaire that sits higher if it is more likely to get caught on stuff??

Agree that high settings can accentuate the center stone ... BUT ... I also think that low-settings are more user-friendly & a bit more understated. Some well known name brand jewelers do low-set rings -- Cartier, Tiffany, Harry Winston etc. They''re not "trying so hard" yanno? When I see super high settings I tend to think the owner is "showy". I *know* that''s judgmental but it''s what I think.

Personally, I prefer lower settings.

It really is about personal choice. In your (or other people''s) face or understated? All depends on your style.

Sometimes you can have too much of a good thing

Yes, diamonds definitely look larger when set higher. But because in real life you view a setting from different angles, it will look strange to have a stone set too high (as in that one shown above). It would look like the diamond were teeter tottering in stilts... I'm not sure why there should be that much space between the culet and the base of the ring. A little space, yes. But too much space and it's like wearing tweezers on the finger.

But in general, high cathedral settings are really pretty in my opinion. I should qualify that "too high" for me means half the height of the diamond is empty space under it!
