I''m not an expert but I''ll give you what my thought process would be. I would use platinum for the following reasons:

1. Platinum is harder than white gold

2. White gold is rhodium plated and has to be dipped at least once a year because it is made partially with yellow gold.

I have a white gold ring and it constantly has to be dipped. Hope that helps.

Hi Sparkle Girl
Hopefully an expert will chime in, but I think it has to do with how much metal is used. The only MP ring I have ever had a problem with is a Carl Blackburn (Beverly K) one that keeps loosing diamonds and going out of round. The jeweler said it had to do with the fact that platinum is a more malliable metal, and shifts more easily (I hope I am getting this right) and that in this ring they didn''t use enough metal. My ering is also MP set in platinum, and so far no problems. I like platinum better, but white gold does stay shinier if that is important to you.

Good luck - I will be looking forward to pics!

Another option is palladium. I''ve heard that lots of manufacturers are using it now because it has some of the advantages of plat (stays white, no dipping) but costs more like white gold.

I am also debating on white gold or platinum for my girlfriend''s engagement ring
Platinum is more durable and all but the price just went up recently
there is a huge price different between these two

actually whitegold is harder than platinum..plat. is just more dense.

there are pros and cons to both metals, you can do a search her for a ton of info.
personally, i''d go with plat. if price isn''t and issue. i like the heavier weight of it plus the patina it gets over time. with any pave ring there is the possibility of the loss of stones, it''s just the nature of the design. i''d also suggest reading Leon Mege''s article on pave:

Like I said, I''m not an expert. Turns out my thought process was wrong. I wish I could update it to add dense instead of hardness

Thanks for the clarification.

Both metals are widely popular and prized for their respective properties. They are both excellent metals for use with pave diamonds. I have a 14K white gold pave diamond engagement ring and I haven''t had any problems in the year I have owned it. And I happen to prefer the warmer, glossier white that is unique to white gold. You may prefer the more tin-white color of platinum and the gray-silver patina it gets over time. Many do. But as I said, it''s all a matter of preference.
