I was just curious... Is Hearts and Arrows a brand name, or just the outcome of an ideal cut? I have seen photos, but I wasn''t sure if it was something that a specific company strived for, or if all cutters strive for it. Thanks!

Hearts and arrows is the term used for a type of top precision diamond cutting leading to a hearts and arrows pattern, then you can get brand names such as A Cut Above for Whiteflash's hearts and arrows diamonds, Hearts on Fire is another brand of h&a.

More here - http://www.pricescope.com/hearts_indx.asp

Not all cutters will strive for this level of cutting, some diamonds are cut for maximum weight retention, and or to hit ' magic' weights with carat jumps, sometimes at the expense of cut quality. Also it is important to note that because a diamond might show a strong arrow pattern does not necessarily mean it is a true example of this cutting style.

Hearts and arrows is not a brand name, but there are brands that show hearts an arrows- such as Hearts on Fire, and A Cut Above (whiteflash).

Also, h&a are not automatically the "outcome" in an ideal cut stone. It is something that some cutters strive for, but not all. For example, some cut for weight retention which does not necessarily make for the most beautiful stones.

It is/was in Japan. Fortunately for us, the owner of the brand did not protect it here in the states and it is now used freely, often for stones that are not.
