I think I''ve exhausted this topic, but do have one more question. Is fluorescence visible from the side of the stone? My stone is graded as having faint blue fluorescence. It faces up bluish in direct sunlight, but I don''t think I can see any blue when I view it from the side. Am I merely seeing a reflection of the sky? My stone is also one of those that goes dark in direct beams of light.

Since no one has commented I will, but I''m by no means an expert in fluorescence, I would say you are more likely seeing the color of the sky reflected if you are looking at the side of the stone against a blue sky. Most stones with faint fluorescence don''t exhibit much if any blue in direct sunlight. Pity actually. My stone is only faint, but I would appreciate strong fluorescence as long as it was "blue."

You usually only see it under blacklighting.

Most blue looking stones are reflecting color from the sky, moreso than the fluor.

Fluoresence is a property of the stone itself, so it is visible from any angle. If you look at my avatar, you''ll see it is visible from the side (mine is a 0.74ct D w/ SB fluor, pic taken under a blacklight). However, most of the time in direct sunlight on a clear day, you see the reflection of the blue sky - makes almost any diamond look "blue" in those conditions - my 0.51ct G w/ no fluor looks just as "blue" as my D w/ SB on a sunny day... hope that helps!

Your avatar picture is way kewl!!

I had an experience with this. I had a strong blue F color RB. It was very, very pretty. But it was weird. From the side I could see a violet color (in my sunny upstairs room), and the stone didn''t seem perfectly transparent from the side. I held it up to the light next to a different stone I had w/o flo. No doubt, that strong flo one just wasn''t as "see thru". From the top the effect wasn''t very noticable cause the stone was GIA ex cut and really reflected alot of light and was very brilliant.

I took it to a store and did the same test so I wasn''t thinking it was a fluke. My husband could see this too. In the end I returned it. Frankly, I wish I could have kept it cause there were many nice things about it and the replacement I got cost 2K more. But I just wasn''t comfortable with it so it had to go. If I were really rich I would have kept both cause it was quite neat.

Thanks, this helps a lot! Now I can rest.
