the answer must be "yes" or else how can you guys afford all these beautiful jewelry? ..

this Q was ask on a watch forum. how can you guys afford all these watches?

I bet a lot of posters definitely make larger than average salaries, but really it's about priorities. I'd rather buy jewelry than fancy cars, for example. I don't have a car at all, and I love it. Plus I save a ton of $ each year by not paying for gas, maintenance, insurance, etc. I hope I never live anywhere that I need a car again.

Depends on your definition of "rich"....

I think we are comfortable but we spent the weekend in Palm Beach, Florida last weekend and I determined... we are most certainly in the lower rungs of income ladder when traveling in that county.... the homes, cars and jewels :lickout: were over the top... There were a couple on the oceanside that made Trump's beach house there look like a shack if that is at all possible...

so I think it's based on perspective....

Like beauty, rich is in the eye of the beholder.

Rich is a dirty word to many people so they don't want to think of themselves as rich.
That's probably why I've heard "rich" defined as someone who makes at least five times what you make.

Relativity goes the other way too.
Poor people also can think they aren't poor because others are more poor.

Watch this two-mintue film preview for an eye-opening example at 1:14.

This documentary, Killer of Sheep, is a superb and astonishing film shot in Watts; the ghetto of Los Angeles in the 1960s.
I recently rented the DVD from Netflix.

Compared to most of the people I deal with at work, yes, which is why I don't wear my rings at work at all, and if I do, a plain band. And in comparison to national average for income, I would consider myself above average with my husband's salary factored in. On my own, no.

Not anymore. . .

DD just got into her first choice $chool . . . :D :) :| :$$): :blackeye:

She wants to go out to dinner to celebrate. I'm thinking Burger King, since the jewels on the paper crown are the only bling I'm going to see for a while.

Er, no. Not objectively.

But I've got enough to make me happy so I feel rich! :))

I'm not rich but we don't go without anything we need so we are happy.

Well, heaven knows this discussion has been had ad nauseum, albeit in a thread now gone. Rich is not just how do you feeeeel about it. It has its empirical side too. If you fall into a top tier of incomes in the US - like say, the top 20% of 2-person household (or whatever category you fall in), then sorry, by a numbers standpoint, you are rich. And if you don't FEEL rich or deny that you are rich, then you have to wonder how poor you have to be to be poor, since if a top 20%-er is "poor", what does that make someone in the bottom 20%?

I prefer to stick with the numbers, and by any standard, top 20% in earnings should be top 'o the heap. But since rich never seems to be empirical and shifts according to one's mood, then I feel, if not rich, then very blessed. I own my home, I have someone who loves me, I'm employed, and I have all the money I require for not only my needs, but some of my desires. How is that not rich?

Nope not rich but we are very good with managing our money.

Exactly. There is a point at which you are rich (or wealthy, if you prefer that term), no matter how much you want MORE.

Our incomes for American averages are high, they are right at normal for Perth standards. Neither of us is pulling in $200k at a mining company, so we'll never be "Australian rich."

Well, define rich. I certainly don't feel rich going by my definition, but compared to what others have (or don't have, I suppose), we're probably very rich.

We own old cars with lots of miles on them, we live in a modest condo, I don't have much jewelry that's of significant value, and we don't travel as much as we'd like.

Last time this topic came up, someone mentioned that a family of 4 needs $500k to live "comfortably" in Perth. My reaction ~~> :errrr:

I suppose everyone has different definitions of comfort. We don't earn anywhere close to that amount, but we also live in a house that cost $150k less than average, and don't have children with $30k/year tuition fees. We would always like to earn more, hence me getting this second degree, but we want for little. I am very content with our lifestyle, so $500k sounds ludicrous to me.

Yes. We are very rich. We are not in the top 1% of Americans but we are in the top 1% of the world and if that's not rich what is?

Money rich? As I fall over from fits of laughter um, no, not by any stretch of the imagination and I've got an amazing one. I do however have two kids I love, a great husband, and a job I enjoy.

Thanks, Yssie, Dancing Fire, and Zoe! :wavey:

You're very sweet. You must have recently gone through the college madness yourselves, it is not for the faint of heart! ::)

DF, I was thinking about this, I think a better question would be "Is everyone on PS cheap (maybe a nicer word for it)?"

Everyone is here because they are trying to get the most bling for their buck, so there is an element of cheapness in there somewhere . . .

No, we're not cheap we are FRUGAL! :D

As for the original question: It all depends on perspective. My family is fed, clothed, have a roof over our heads, our needs are met and many of our wants are also met. So, that means yes. Now, am I rich in terms of $$$, probably not but I do know how to stretch my funds to make the most of my purchases. :)
