I am concerned I am more concerned about having the "BEST" rather then whats logical. I have heard the colorless diamonds will actually pick up the yellow color from the band. So am I right to think that on a yellow band a g color would be the way to go? Or is even lower like an I just as good?

Regardless of the band color, get the prongs in platinum or white gold. Then it is not a problem. My e-ring is yellow gold and the diamond is F color set in wg prongs. The stone is completely white and does not pick up the yg. As a matter of fact, the whiteness is a nice contrast next to the yg.

I have a G on a yellow gold shank with a 6 prong platinum head.

It doesn''t make it look yellow at all to me...

Then you want a D, FL diamond in platinum.

Now, there is no need for such overkill. That''s only for people concerned with having ''the best'' without regard for what''s logical. So I''m confused about what exactly it is that you want. Do you want the best value for your money, or do you want what is coventionally considered ''the best?

In other words, choose what diamond color you want without regard to the setting.

18k yellow gold with platinum prongs.
