Hey guys,

I´ve been looking for a diamond for my fiancé,

And I found this Holloway Cut Adviser and a Data base from http://www.gemnation.com/base?processor=getPage&pageName=cut that tells you the proportions media of well known ideal cuts.

So I tought, what if I check online for diamonds and advanced the search with only the proportions that only ideal cuts diamonds have.

And I noticed that I found two diamonds that matches ideal cuts proportions and also matches Holloway Cut Adviser grading both diamonds same!!!

Here are the two diamonds…

Brian Gavin Hearts and Arrows

Wire Price: $3,816
Ideal Scope – HCA (min. 0.5 / máx. 2.0): 0.9 Excellent
Light return: Excellent
Fire: Excellent

Brian Gavin Select:

Wire Price: $2,749
Ideal Scope – HCA (min. 0.5 / máx. 2.0): 0.9 Excellent
Light return: Excellent

There is way so much difference in price!! more than $1K.
Difference I saw is one diamond is SI1 while the other one is SI2 and also one is GIA and the other is AGS?

Can somebody help me? If I am doing it in the right way…
Should I go for the Brian Gavin Select?

thank you

please some help!!!

i am no expert, and i do hope the others can chime in.

considering that you are looking for some direction and others havent responded yet, i will provide some guidance where i can. From what i have read and seen, the H&A cut is a specific cut where you see hearts and arrows in the diamond itself. See the pics included in the AGS 0.774. it shows some heart shapes and some arrows.

Holloway Cut Adviser (commonly called on PS as HCA) is only a tool to guide ppl on the numbers on the diamond. There are many dianonds around that have been cut to whatever specifications. And the HCA tool if under 2.0, it means that the diamond has a better chance at performing- giving good optics. HCA of 1 does not mean that it is better than a HCA of 2. As long as the HCA value is under 2. What this will translate to is that the diamond is going to sparkle more than other diamonds of HCA>2.

There are also diamonds that have been cut to ideal specifications like: a cut above, hearts and arrows. solasfera and so many more, These diamonds do not need to go through the HCA tool, as these diamonds have been cut to give you the best optics. AGS are more inclined to give you a report based on the optics of the diamond. GIA gives you the minimum of the cut size clarity and angles. It doesnt report on the optics. There are other tools like the ideal scope (showing the amount of brightness) and ASET (showing if there is leakage or good light return in the diamond) . From what i have understood, these are also adjuncts to identifying great diamonds. I am sure that there are links but i cant locate them at the moment. Safe to say that with Ideal cut diamonds like ACA, H&A, they will have a bright diamond with and idealscope of red. The ASET will also show areas of redness- less leakage. colours to avoid in ASET is blacks and whites.

What you will learn is that CUT is the king/ queen of the diamond world. Yes, colour and clarity budget also play a part. However, the cut will give you the optics that make other ppl notice your diamond. The optics meaning sparkle, fire, scintillation etc.

So, based on the 2 diamonds that are ideal cut vs the hearts and arrows that you have shown here, most ppl on PS would say pick the H&A. I would, too. The ideal cut doesnt seem to perform or pop out of the screen like the H&A does.

i do hope that others do chime in to give you more advice.

Edited- you may want to ask the moderator to move this topic to rocky talk, where you will get more traffic and more advice. i think there is a tab on the top right of your post. choose report the post and you can give your reason there- incorrect forum.
What is good to know as well is that there are other PSers out there that can help you find your diamond, if you give them your specifications:
1) budget for diamond
2) budget for ring
3) colour of diamond that you are happy with. some will happily go to a H or i colour as that may mean a larger stone than an F or C for a smaller stone
4) inclusions- some Si1 are eye clean from a certain distance 6'. this may mean that you dont have to choose vs or vvs clarity which means more $$

I posted this in your other thread:

Mostly I think you need to understand the difference between the 2 stones you have selected. The in house BG stone (the Si1) comes with a lot of performance information and an upgrade policy. It is a stone that is in BG's branded line that he has specially cut. You are paying more for each of these things and have to decide if that is worth it to you.

The other stone (the BG Select SI 2) is a stone that would have to be called in for them to look at. It is not in house and is not part of his brand and also not included in the upgrade policy (should you ever find yourself wanting to upgrade later).

Another thing that is influencing the price difference is the BG one is SI1 and the Select one is SI2.
