misery loves company...

By the way, don''t get me wrong, I completely understand the safety concerns. It''s just that this isn''t about missing out on a holiday. I''m due to go home to visit a sick loved one and don''t know when they''ll lift the ban.

Haven''t heard anything about it. Where is this happening?

CNN

"Ireland, Sweden, Norway, Belgium, Denmark and the Netherlands also announced the closure of their airspace, authorities in each country said."

The UK isn''t allowing anything in or out until tomorrow 7am at the earliest.

now they''re saying 48 hours...

I''m not trying to fly anywhere but I just wanted to say that I hope you get to your loved one soon mayerling.

Ugh, I'm sorry you're stuck, and have to go and visit a loved one that's not doing well, hopefully they'll lift the ban sooner than later. I am affected aswell, well, my parents are on a vacation and were supposed to fly back to Sweden today, they actually boarded the plane, sat in their seats for a couple of hours until it was official that their flight was cancelled due to the volcanic ash, so they had to unboard. It's still unknown when the flights will resume again, online newspapers are saying MONDAY.

I'm at home with our family's dog, and can't leave him for more than 2 hrs at a time, which does not leave me do much.

I'm not going to complain though.

Thanks, sparklyheart. I''m still waiting for news. The air traffic agency said they''d give an update at 8 o''clock but they haven''t yet.

I''m sorry your parents are stranded, Viola. Where are they? The UK? I hope the airline is providing them with overnight accommodation.

Sorry to hear about everyone''s travel problems and sick loved ones.

Hope it clears up soon so everyone can get on their way!

Thanks, they were on vacation in Turkey.

Holy cow. Earthquakes all over the place and now this. Better stranded on the ground a while, than planes falling out of the air. Engines don''t work very well when they are sucking in solids.

any update yet mayerling? I''m so sorry you didn''t get to leave on time to visit your loved one

Thanks for checking in, Maevie. They''ve extended the ban to 7pm now. Apparently there''s not much wind so the cloud isn''t moving as fast as they were hoping. It''s not looking good.

I''m not personally affected but I have a friend returning from the UK to Ireland for her wedding which is on tomorrow and her flight was cancelled yesterday. Luckily she''s getting the ferry from Hollyhead to Dublin today. Sorry to hear that you can''t get to visit your loved one.

Wow! That is so stressful. I''m glad she''s been able to make alternative arrangements. I just spoke with my airline and they promised that since it''s a health matter they''ll try to get me on the first flight out - but who knows when that''ll be.

I know-I don''t know how she has stayed so calm! Hopefully it will clear soon and you''ll be on that flight soon.

Now it''s 1am on Saturday at the earliest. I''m beginning to think I''d prefer it if they told me the latest (I know it''s not possible). This way I''d be glad if things cleared up sooner instead of getting more and more disappointed every few hours.

I hope you get there mayerling! What a shame that only Saturday, EARLIEST. I checked this morning, and CNN said something about 7pm tonight for some countries. I think you are smack in the middle of the cloud of ash.

I've booked my dream trip (supposed to be leaving tonight for Italy). I didn't buy travel insurance. In any case, checking the website regularly, but so far, Italy is ok.

Where's your flight leaving from allycat? If it's somewhere else in southern Europe it should be ok. Hope you make it.

I''ve taken this ferry several times and the last time we took it the waves were so intense and everyone was puking - horrible. I hope your friend has a lovely steady ride to her wedding!!

Also - hope everyone else gets to where they need to be soon! I''ll have to google this situation because I hadn''t even heard what volcano it is or where...

Probably another 48 hours at least...

p.s. It''s good to have PS. At least I can vent about and lament this situation.

lol! The dublin-hollyhead ferry is always like that! I haven''t taken it in years but every time I have I''ve ended up in the bathroom getting sick. Thankfully it''s only a short trip!
The volcano is in Iceland and they''re not sure when it''s going to stop so that''s why they can''t say when flights will go back to normal.

Mayerling, I''m so sorry you''re stuck, and I hope this all passes quickly so you can visit your friend very soon.

W and I are supposed to be leaving for Paris on Friday, so I''m really hoping the wind picks up soon. *sigh*

Thanks, Lauren. The forecast isn''t very hopeful about wind, though. Would it be possible for you to take eurostar to Paris instead?

It just occurred to me that you might not be located in the UK so I guess eurostar wouldn''t be an option.

Is the Detroit airport particularly bad?

Well, we don''t have travel plans so we aren''t affected that way, but our little girl has horrible itchy red eyes and a dreadful cough. There was a public health warning today from the NHS here - ash and particles have reached ground level in Scotland and are causing some minor symptoms like this. My eyes hurt too, but hers are really bad.

We''re going to stay indoors tomorrow, but the damage is already done.
