Is an OEC not a good candidate for setting in a tension setting?

I have posted a poll in SMTR about a Gelin Abaci style as a possible setting for an OEC. One response suggested I post here for expert opinions on the problems with setting an OEC in a tension setting due to the uneveness of an old stone. View poll here:

Has anybody ever set on OEC or other old stone in a GA setting and had problems or was it OK? Thanks!!!

HI:

Not every diamond is a candidate for a tension setting--I think each stone has to be judged by its own characteristics. Girdle thickness, clarity issues can propose problems.

cheers--Sharon

Agree with Sharon above. If your OEC is symmetrical enough and for as long as the girdle is not extremely thin/thin, it ought to be ok.

Good luck, can''t wait how it turns out!

Agreed. It does seem that most OEC''s have thin or very thin girdles, so that in and of itself would make it a bad idea. But if you get it recut on the edges or find one with a thicker girdle it could work.

Assuming your OEC passes any girdle issues, I would simply say that a large part of the attraction of a tension setting is the symmetry. If your stone is noticeably out of round I''m not sure that a tension setting will look best?

Purr, you are right that most antique "rounds" are not perfectly round. It sounds like a modern RB would be a better choice for a tension setting and now I understand why. Thanks everyone for posting!
