I was talking to a jeweller who mentioned going for a VS2, ideal cut stone, and said that he''d recommend an I stone. He said not to consider D,E,F and go with G only if we are very particular.

Is this true? I didn''t even consider an I stone when I was looking. Wouldn''t the color difference be significantly noticable.

Also, how fussy should we be regarding polish/symmetry?

Given size, I think the jeweler is right.

Can he show you this one next to a a D/E colo (both culet upand face up on a fold of wlite paper, preferably) so that you see what he is talking about ? I bet you will find the difference subtle. If not, it only means you care more about these color grades than I do.

What does he mean by "ideal cut" (assuming this is about a round brilliant) ? Ideal cuts have "ideal" polish and symmetry grades by AGS's definition. Otherwise, it may be worth asking what "ideal" means - there is no standard for this denomincation and throughout Pricescope buyers' stories you may find out that some ideals are more ideal than others and prices go all over the board too

Just my 0.2, of course.

Have him/her show you an I color stone and a G color stone that are about the same size and hold them 5-6 inches apart.
Can you see the color difference?
I cant.

When they are almost touching I can see the difference but on the finger who is going to hold a simular size diamond within 1/2 inch of it to compare.

I have had friends run the same test and only one could see the difference and the I was an igi graded stone which means it was probably a j or k by gia/ags standards.
Out of 5 people not one could pick a gia graded I out next to a gia G when they were 5-6 inches apart more times than pure chance would indicate.

My engagement ring is an I color VS1 .71 carat and it''s very white and bright!

Sounds like you''ve found a great jeweller.
