What is the difference between an Asscher and a square EC? I went to a jeweler who said that and Asscher is just a square emerald but is it true?

Actually, I found the answer on another post. If you have an generic Asscher cut, please post. Would love to see them!

I think there is a branded Royal Asscher cut which is not a modified emerald. I could be wrong though.

Joseph Asscher was the member of the Asscher family who originally branded and patented the square emerald cut in 1902. The Royal Asscher of today carries 74 facets, and it's almost impossible to find a "dog" among branded Royal Asschers, but to find an amazing generic square emerald takes a bit more research.

The generic Asscher is generally referred to as a square emerald cut, but can sometimes actually be listed as an Asscher in GIA paperwork - sometimes having 4 breaks on the pavillian (like the branded Royal Asscher), but often carrying 3 breaks. The more the cut of the generics progress, the more I see that often mimic the octagonal shape of the original branded Asscher.

Royal Asschers carry a pretty high premium, and although it may seem easier to just go with a Royal, gorgeous Sq Ems can be found if you're willing to do the legwork.

And, a few pics of my non-branded GIA certified "Asscher". Weird thing, when my husband was looking, this was one of the only GIA certed square emeralds that actually listed "Asscher" as the shape, so he snapped it up.

Lauren...it never gets old looking at that beauty. *drool*

I always kind of wondered why there was even a cut labeled as a square emerald when it is, in my eyes, clearly what we call an asscher now. Curious.

You're right, and so have I! Traditional emerald cuts have so many variations in their corner cutting, and an Asscher depends on those deeply cut corners to sustain the pattern definition inherent in an "asscher". Seems kind of like a square step cut with no/minimal cut corners and no/minimal windmills should be referred to as a square emerald, and a generic Asscher should be referred more to as a cut-cornered square step cut.

But, whatever works, I guess.
