Can someone explain how a princess side stone is ''invisible set''? These are in reference to channel set princess side stones. They appear to be set flush with the shank and very tightly together. Can any jeweler set a side stone this way? Is it more expensive (I assume) than a channel set?

I don''t know if the process is necessarily more expensive (not a jeweler), but yes I think side stones can be invisibly set.

My wedding band (see my avatar) is two rows of invisible set princess cuts. I was discouraged by our jewelery to get a channel set band with rounds because he told me they would not stay as clean as invisible set princess stones would. I chose to go along with that and have been happy ever since. I don''t know what type of setting you have in mind for your e-ring ( can you post pics?), I am just giving you my experience with invisible set princess stones in a wedding band and hopefully you can apply that to your e-ring purchase. Maybe other experts will chime in here and advise as well for your benefit!

Thanks Monarch. The setting we are making is a semi-bezel with a wide shank (I don''t have a picture that describes it well). The shank would have princess stones on either side. I just think the invisible set flush with the shank would look better than the slight recessed channel set but I wasn''t sure if this was a common way to set these stones. Apparently they have to cut channels in the back of the diamond and these channels then are used to secure the stone from behind. Sounds a little tedious to me.

The much bigger concern with invisible set stones are durability-- many here have been cautioned away from using them in a ring that is going to be used as long and often as an e-ring, as the process is just not designed to withstand that type of use, and you will eventually start losing stones. Just an FYI.

Exactly right jeff... i had an invisibly set princess cut ring that shifted around. Then, even worse every diamond fell out because they are fit together like a puzzle piece. And that was after only 6 months. That type of setting is not meant for an everyday piece most of the time.
