I could have sworn there was a thread on this recently but I cannot find it so I''m starting a new one.

Now that chubb seems to be out of the picture - is there ANY international insurance that can be had - specifically in China? Phoenix and I both are in need and it seems like we cannot be alone.

Please tell me that the only safe option is NOT just leaving our diamonds in safety deposit boxes. I really want to spend some money, but it seems a waste if I cannot safely travel (and live) abroad with my ring.

Help us please! lol

shameless bump :)

another bump - this is just not a popular topic! Is it because the outcome is futile? If it is I''d like to know that too lol

I''m not sure that this will be helpful, but I thought I might as well pass it along, fwiw.

My rings are covered by the rider on our house insurance policy as long as they''re in my possession whether I''m wearing them or not. If you''re planning to buy valuable jewellery while you''re away and will need coverage, you should check with your insurance agent as to what that entails. Anything I purchased abroad was uninsured until I came back with an appraisal or had one done when I was back home.

Sorry I can''t be of more help.

Well, maybe... not sure. I want to reset my diamond now and take it with me, but if I''m not going to be able to secure insurance for it I am not going to bother resetting it now and I''ll just stick it in a SDBox for 2 or 3 years until I''m back from China and that seems like a real shame.

why would you want to insure it? insurance is normally for stuff that you cant live without, like your life, your home, etc. A ring isnt in that same sort of category. insurance on jewelry is often times horrendously expensive - after 10 or 20 years of insurance you could have bought a replacement for whatever you were insuring. as far as leaving it in the bank goes - why even bother having one then? you buy a ring to wear, not hide away for years at a time!

It is my understanding, and my husband agrees, that you insure that which you cannot afford to replace. My diamond studs are not insured. My gold wedding band is not insured. My silver jewelry is not insured. I can afford to replace all of that. Technically, I could afford to replace the ring as well, but that was a one time expense that will not be replaced out of pocket. Insurance buys piece of mind. I would rather not hide it away, but I am moving to a country far from home where I do not speak the language (yet) and I would really prefer to HAVE that piece of mind before wearing it there.

Cehrabehra,

Are either of you being transferred there for work? If so, speak to your employer regarding insurance for all things, including your ring. If you are not being transfered but have an employer waiting there for you, speak to them about it. When you move are you going to get insurance on your residence contents if you are, ask them. Also, perhaps check with AAA or other travel insurance suppliers to see if they have a direction or path they could put you on.

Sorry I couldn''t be of more assistance. Hopefully, that helps you spark some brainstorming...

Good luck.

Thanks Ice - that''s some good info. I just got off the phone with Touchstone and they confirmed that Chubb is no longer doing this at all, whatsoever. Boo! I will contact relo and see if they have any advice.

Cehrabehra - I only peruse PS once in a while when I get a few extra minutes so I just saw this. I''m in China and my jewelry is covered. In fact, I washed my ring down the sink here and insurance gave me the money for a new ring. It is through my husband''s company. Give me a few days and I can dig up the information. We are in the process of moving and everything is in boxes.

If I remember correctly from a post a long time ago you are coming/in Shanghai. Is this correct? I am in Yantai, but travel to Shanghai somewhat frequently. If you would like, maybe admin will send you my email address. China has a lot of great things and a lot of "what are they thinking" things. It help to find someone to talk to that understands both sides. Especially at first, when you are still adjusting.

If you have any questions about anything let me know. We lived in Shanghai for a year (5 years ago).

Just talked to DH and he said the name of the insurance company is Marsh. I''ll try to find more details when I unpack/
