Today I was watching "The Fabulous Life of the Hottest Hollywood Couples" on VH1 and they started talking about the newest batch of erings presented to starlets this year...

And while all of them were lovely...I thought it was very interesting when they were talking about the prices. Yes, some of them were huge and over the top...but, I think the price tags they stuck them with seems a little (for lack of a better word) fictonal.

One good example was a 3ct rb ring that they had priced at over 100k! Ummm, in what world???? I know the diamond is probably the creme de la creme of diamonds...but, even if the sticker were 100k, you KNOW a celeb got a decent discount. Some other examples were a 5ct ring for over 500k. I don''t know, but I find it pretty hard to believe.

Anyway, no point in this posting...just found it interesting...

I don''t think it''s unbelievable at all...a 3 ct. H VS1, ideal cut round is on Whiteflash.com right now for $72,000. If the diamond is colorless and/or a few steps up in clarity a 3 carat can hit 100k easily...at least a good one.

A crappy 3 carat on the other hand can be had for far far far less...

3ct 100k is easy...
3.01 G VVS2 62.4% 54% GIA gia - #16 md ex ex no 9.21x9.26x5.76 $32106 $96638SP

3.01 F VVS2 59.2% 65% GIA thn-v thk no gd gd ft 9.30*9.37*5.53 $33060 $99510*

Neither one is a cut a PSer would touch with a 10 foot pole.

This one might be well enough cut to consider and it isn''t even a D and is almost 200k...
3.31 F IF 60.3% 55% GIA tn-m ex ex ft 9.67-9.78-5.86 $58080 $192245

and remember, these are celebrities... they have money to spend and the shops know it. I wouldn''t be surprised if they paid more than avg for them rather than got discounts just b/c the shops know they can afford to pay the hefty price.

I think of it like a "swag bag"...celebs get great deals, because then store can then say "So & So bought their ring here" ergo drawing in more business because now X wants her ering from said store because this celeb got hers there.

This type of hype is very popular in swag bags...designers or companies will give away millions in product just so that celebs will use it and then the company can use them as free pubilicity.

Same with diamonds, I assume....

Perhaps slightly inflated, but a 3 carat stone with a custom platinum mount- I could see that coming to $100k. You have to remember what a premium larger stones carry per carat... lol, I know I''m not rocking a 3 carat stone ;)
I understand the ''swag bag'' idea too, but I don''t know of any jeweler who can give away a 3 carat diamond just because it''s a celeb- but lol, maybe they just think of it as a loan since most of those marriages last only months anyways ;)

At a trade jewellery show recently, I saw one stand that had exceptional stock that made me do a double take. Now this stand obviously catered to the highest end of the market, this was obvious to anyone with eyes!!!!! The stones looked like they were really precious!!!!

I casually asked about the prices just out of curiosity and was told that some of the diamonds were $32000 plus tax a carat in US dollars and upwards. And.....keep in mind that this is a wholesale quote!!! So you could very easily imagine a 4 carat stone costing $200000 in the shops!!!!

And for whats its worth, these stones looked like royal jewells to my eyes anyway. Even the emerald, sitting on its comfy cushion looked like it was lighting up the room!!!!!

Sigh........
