I was asked to read this write-up from howstuffworks on diamonds. It is more truthful and informative than the average diamond article I''ve come across from normal sources. It even touches on the "Perception of Rarity" of diamonds on page 6

Good find, Tomatoe. They had it there for quite a while I guess but for some reason put it on the first page for PeopleStuff

When you hang out at pricescope too much you see potential errors in this sort of thing

.

For instance he says "A diamond that is created from 100-percent carbon will be completely transparent." But I thought that there are type II stones whose color is due not to the substitution of impurities but instead deformations in the crystal structure, which is improved by HPHT. He also refers to D-Z stones as "transparent" which is also somewhat misleading.

I also like "A diamond placed in a mounting on a ring has a markup of about 100 percent to 200 percent." Not if Leonid has something to say about it

Yeah... for some reason all these explanations on diamonds do not feel much need to offer support to their claims and use common sense or common language (as in the novel definition of 'transparent').

I might agree with the respective statement, as far as accent and ready-mounted side stones are concerned. A bit of an overstatement and by no means generally applicable... but what else is new ?
