hey guys,

I''ve read all the threads on shipping and insuring loose stones and those have been helpful-- thanks. My question now is that if our stone is insured by JM and the bf wants it sent out to a jeweler to be set, should he still pay the extra money to have the stone insured by USPS while in transit?

If so, is it just to have an added assurance?

If not, I am thinking that he can just send it by Express Mail even though it only insures up to $5,000.00 value bc the stone is technically already insured-- what do you think?

All advice is welcome please.

p.s. He attempted to use UPS per advice by appraiser but they told him they do not ship loose stones (which I have subsequently also read on an older thread on here).

I would contact JM and ask them if they cover the diamond while it is in transit. If they would reimburse you if the package got lost, then I wouldn''t insure it again. However, I don''t know if JM will do that.

Just go ahead and send it registered mail, insured. I sent a diamond back and it was about $19 for $11,000 value. So it's not enough to really worry about. Registered mail is the most secure method of shipping. Even though the diamond is already insured, you don't want to take the chance of it being lost, do you?

hi,
thanks for the replies.

It was just that we were hoping to get it sent there quicker by Express Mail rather than taking 2-5 days by registered mail. We were orig. counting on using UPS and doing 2nd day delivery which would''ve cost us $200+ so anything with registered mail is a lot cheaper actually costing around $30.00.

But yeah, being unsure whether JM would cover the stone while in transit I probably need to just go ahead and let it take 2-5 days -- it''s just somewhat aggravating bc I hate having to wonder about it while it''s in transit for so long.

Both the jeweler and the appraiser had told us to do insure it and send it by 2nd and since they were experienced we assumed they knew what they were talking about but there is no option that we''ve found that is 2nd day delivery AND insuring it for a value over $5,000.00.

What did you end up doing? I am in the same dilemma, I call JM and they said the Loose stone is insured while in transit. I want it to get their faster then 3-5days as is priority insured, and was therefore thinking of doing express overnight USPS, without insurance, which comes out to be $18. With insurance upto $5000, it comes up to be $70. Do I need a second insurance? Has anyone worked with JM before done this. The second question is on USPS express, if you declare the value, let''s say $5000, does it appear on the outside of the package? Any help will be appreciated.
