Hi everyone,

i have a diamond that i would like to set in a VC setting. I am in Australia, so before i send the stone to VC to be set, should i insure the loose stone? Or should i just send it to Larry uninsured, have him set the diamond, and then insure the ring when i get it back in 2-3 weeks???

also, i have read some threads where people discuss import duty etc on diamond jewellery that has been bought in the US. In my case, since i only bought the setting in USA, will i only be charged tax for the setting itself? Thanks in advance, i''m just trying to calculate how much more it will cost, and if a VC ring is really worth the effort.

hey I read this "Jewelry sent to the USA from Australia is exempt from customs duty thanks to a Free Trade Agreement between these two countries which came into effect in January 2005" anyhow, about insuring, I would definitely insure the diamond as most jeweler are not responsible for diamond damage during setting even though they are super careful, things happen

I''m not sure what they all claim, but they are still responsible for negligent acts.

Hmmmm,

i just spoke with Sara from VC (who is so great btw) and she said i would have to insure my diamond, insure the parcel that i send it in for the value of the diamond.

i think i should just order the setting and then have a local jeweller set the diamond locally.

D&T, r u sure about what u wrote? I have heard people buying jewellery in the US has to pay a certain amount of GST (maybe 10%)?

I got this off of Evamartin''s website, but it was exporting out of Australia, is it different coming and going out of Australia to USA? is my other question, I was looking into her for some other project. and she''s in Australia

Gosh, I really think it is best to have VC set the stone in their setting. I know it is a lot of trouble being out of the country, though. I do think insurance is essential.

Thanks D&T, Diamond Seeker and Ribbon =)

Yeah i do think insurance is absolutely necessary, but the extra costs just makes me cringe

i don''t know what to do

Wait, if i fly to SF to have the ring made, I don''t have to pay GST on it when i fly back right??? As far as i can remember, i never had to pay any GSt on stuff i bought overseas while on holiday. Now how can i convince DF to go on a holiday to SF?

Good luck though, it sounds like a fun excuse and vacation right? kill two birds with one stone... Sorry its such a pain to import/export out of the country.

Thanks D&T =)

i went to a local jeweller today and asked them for a quote for a similar design, and guess what... they are asking for the same amount of money VC has quoted me!!!

ugh, sometimes i hate jewelry shopping in Aus, they think they can charge an arm and a leg for a VC-esque design. And they told me it was handcrafted, but i just know it won''t be as special as an authentic VC =(((
