I know there are many topics about this, but I am not finding the answer I need.

My engagement ring should be arriving this Wednesday from Blue Nile. I don''t think I need it appraised for value per se, since it is my understanding that insurance will cover the amount you paid, and not what what someone says it''s worth.

I do, however, want to make sure that the diamond matches its GIA cert and that the feathers I saw on the cert do not appear to be endangering the diamond in any way. I purchased a loupe last week and will hopefully receive that soon. Can I evaluate the diamond enough on my own to know that I got the one I paid for, or is it worth taking to a jeweler?

If I take it to a jeweler, will they charge for a quick inspection? Also, where should I take it? The only jeweler I can remember going to was probably 10-15 years ago with my mom. I have no personal experiences with a jeweler so the advice to go to a "trusted jeweler" isn''t working for me. I am from NJ and have found through PS several appraisers in my area. Do I really need to go to an appraiser that i know will charge me when all I need is to match up the inclusions?

‘Free’ advice is often worth less than you pay for it but that’s a question that will depend on your chosen adviser. Most jewelers will be happy to give you an opinion and quite a few of them don’t charge for it.
