Does an inscription invalidate a GIA report after it has been graded?

I recently sent my stone for a reset to cover an inclusion, and upon confirming that they could reset it, the setting company mentioned that covering the inclusion would also mean covering up part of the laser inscription on the girdle. I was okay with this. The problem is, a laser inscription is not mentioned on the lab report. She read what would be covered, and It bears the initials of the company where I purchased the diamond from plus the first 3 numbers of the GIA report.

I really don't want to have to go through the trouble of having it graded again for insurance purposes, but I do want a valid report. Is this is a problem, and if it is, what steps should I take to fix it?

Why would you havve it regraded for insurance? The inscription has the name of the store? Do you have the original GIA report you mentioned the inscription wasnot on that report. Do you have the GIA number.....

Sure. GIA # 117913239.

The company mediating the reset (setting by Vatche) said that a prong would cover "JA 117" and the rest of the inscription would still be uncovered.

It is surely not uncommon for a cutter or vendor adding a laser-inscription, after the stone has gone through GIA. You could thus wonder if the GIA-report still correctly describes the diamond.

Then again, the GIA-description is valid until the stone leaves the lab. While not common, anything could happen to a diamond between the report being issued and today, making the GIA-description incorrect. In that sense, the fact that a laser-inscription was added afterwards should not be a worry, provided you obtained the diamond through a trustworthy source.

Live long,

Thank you, Paul! That is very helpful.
