I am closing tomorrow on my new home! It does not have a separate living room and family room. It has a a combo family/living room (which I will just refer to as the family room). Because it has a really nice finished basement, I am putting my current sofa and love seat in the basement and going to buy new seating for the upstairs family/living room. I am putting a TV in both the basement and the basement and the family room.

The room is 16x14

I originally thought I would buy a sofa and love seat like I had before. But now I am thinking sofa and 2 comfy chairs instead.

I am planning on shopping Tuesday and because it can take over a month to get in furniture, I want to decide fairly quickly.

And if it helps, I don't like sectionals. Those seem to be back big time and I keep seeing them when I have been looking around.

A sofa and 2 chairs will be more versatile as you rearrange the room over the years.
Keep the furniture neutral and stain resistant and you can redecorate and accessorize as the years go by!

Think my answer would depend on seeing a floor plan. Where doors, windows, tv will be sited all make a big difference. Also number of people living in the house, the amount of entertaining you do etc.

Without seeing the layout, I voted couch and two chairs. I'm happier sitting in a chair (comfy with plenty of room) than on a love seat. The live seat can often feel like too much room if I am sitting alone or not enough if another is on it too. The chairs also allow for more flexibility when arranging.

in addition to the flexibility afforded by 2 armchairs, I think many people feel like TooPatient. At least based on the seating chosen by folks in my former living room where there was plenty of room for a sofa, loveseat, plus several upholstered armchairs: if the armchairs were unoccupied, two people never opted to sit on the loveseat together unless they were, e.g., a parent and a child, a romantic couple (i.e., not a platonic duo). Similar to how no one (in my experience) sits in the middle seat of a 3-seat sofa, already occupied on each end, if they have another option.

Best of luck on your furniture foray this week!

We have a sofa and 2 chairs in about the same size family room. We picked recliners because we like the autonomy, and of course for comfort.

Sofa and loveseat sets are really difficult for furniture arrangement, and not as flexible. I had a sofa and loveseat set and NEVER had it work well in any room.
I would first work up a floor plan and figure out how you plan to use the space. Where will the TV be? One idea I like is a drop leaf table behind sofa/loveseat. Can be used for bar set up or buffet for entertaining or used as a workspace with a small chair-and typically will be facing TV.

Sofa and 2 chairs are way more versatile. As others have pointed out—probably better for any future space. Chairs are easy to move around if you end up with a big crowd, or can be used in other rooms if you move.

Looks like no love for love seats! Thanks for input. I never really thought about it until it was pointed out, but at other's homes, I always go for the chair vs sofa or love seat. I am going to get a sofa and 2 chairs.

I voted for sofa and 2 chairs. I'd say our living room is about that size and we have a love seat and a couch and I wish we either had another couch or the 2 chairs. People usually go for the couch first and then only one person sets on the love seat.

Sofa and 2 chairs will maximize the versatility factor as others have pointed out. Good luck and please share pics when you are finished. :appl:
