Hello!
Like many folks, I''ve spent the past few months *trying* to learn, learn, learn prior to making such a big decision as buying a diamond! PS has been SO helpful, the folks on here SO informative, willing to assist, and, well, gentle with newbies like me :-) I figured it was time to pop my head out for the first time and say hi!

Over the course of my lurking in PS, complemented by visits to local jewelers, I''ve gone from i) loving cushions, to ii) realizing I only love chunky cushions, to iii) realizing that chunky cushions are hard to find, and somewhat expensive for the spread I''m hoping for, to iv) realizing that rounds really do shine, and for the dollar can provide the spread I''m looking for. SO- I''ve become a round guy :-)

I''ve got an $18,000 budget, and I''m looking for something in the 2+ carat range, bigger the better, of course, but without sacrificing *too* much in terms of quality. This has settled me towards looking for something with an ideal cut (one thing I''ve learned- cut, cut cut are priority 1, 2 and 3!), H or better color, and SI1 clarity. There are diamonds out there in this range, but its almost overwhelming, the options, and nothing seems to quite have *everything* i''m looking for.

I''ve been keeping close tabs on WF, GOG, ERD, etc., but also peeking at Blue Nile (which can be risky, of course, without actual images, etc.). Over at Blue Nile, I recently found this diamond:

CARAT: 2.72 (big!)
AGSL
Cut: Ideal
Color: I
Clarity: SI1
Depth: 62.4%
Table: 56%
Crown: 35.7 degrees/15.9%
Pavilion: 40.7 degrees/42.8%
Pointed Culet
HCA: 2.3

I''ve learned a lot over the course of my research, but I''m almost numbed at this point, and would appreciate some fresh eyes on this diamond. My big concern with this is the color, I, which is lower than my ideal specs (H+) - BUT, this puppy is HUGE at 2.72 carats, so I''m wondering if it might not be worth taking the plunge...

Any thoughts for me? Much appreciated ahead of time!

Hi, colbay, welcome to pricescope.

My first question is what shape does the person who is going to wear the ring like? You might like rounds, but if she prefers princess or cushions or something else, you'd better be buying one of those. You have a great budget so there should be no worries about finding a good diamond.

I would have some concerns about the steep crown angle of that BN diamond. I would like to see an ASET of IS image, but BN doesn't provide them so you are somewhat buying blind. They do have a good return policy, however.

Hi Jet, thanks for the welcome!
I guess I should have clarified- I''ve dragged the engagement target into a few stores, and she shares my opinion on shape- we started in love with cushions, and still love them, but in person, she fell for the sheer sparkle and spread of rounds for the $ and so decided on rounds over the course of our window shopping.

Hi Colbay!

The diamond shows potential but an Idealscope image would be useful, however as Jet says BN do not provide them. Do you have the diameter measurement of the diamond please, polish and symmetry grades and girdle thickness - and is it an AGS0 cut grade?

LOL- don't be terrified!!

Hi!
They are 8.88x8.93x5.56. For the money (a bit more than my budget, but I can squeeze if need be), this seems big and the AGSL Ideal Cut helps- but I''m a wee bit worried about HCA of 2.3... and as mentioned, the fact that I''m basically buying blind as to eye-clean, ASET and DiamXray...

call gog or wf and see if they can get the diamond in and if they will price match.
problem solved.

Not to muddy the waters, but have you talked to GOG about the chunky signature cushions if you both like them? I would even go to the extent of asking GOG call in this diamond and see if Jon would make a video comparing this round to a similar priced/sized signature cushion so you can see them side by side.

Both problems solved.

Jet,
Thats not a bad idea at all! I contacted GOG- they said they could get the round in for shipping costs etc. ($180) and pricematch if I like it. Is it possible to get a cushion even close to that ballpark? If so, I''d certainly love to see it- I''ll ask if they can do a little side by side for me. That all said- given the couple of "ehms" surrounding that rock (HCA of 2.3, etc.), I''m a little fearful of wasting their time, if there''s a chance that I would be better served by grabbing a ''better scoring'' round (or cushion!) thats a little smaller.

If you were in my shoes, and had 18k to drop on the diamond, what rough specs would you be looking for? Am I crazy thinking I can get away with a 2.3-2.5 carat H (or I- does it make that much of a difference in look?), SI1 with an HCA of 1.5-2? Is that rock out there?

Cheers,
Colbay

Here are some numbers you can use to find a well cut round diamond. With the HCA you can only use it for round diamonds, not fancy shapes such as cushions.

depth - 60 - 62% - although my personal preference is to allow up to 62.4%
table - 54- 57%
crown angle - 34- 35 degrees
pavilion angle - 40.6- 41 degrees
girdle - avoid extremes, look for thin to slightly thick, thin to medium etc
polish and symmetry - very good and above
note - with crown and pavilion angles at the shallower ends ( CA 34- PA 40.6) and steeper ( CA 35- PA 41) check to make sure these angles complement in that particular diamond - eyeballs, Idealscope, trusted vendor input - check as appropriate!

From expert John Pollard.
As the above implies, configurations depend on each other. A little give here can still work with a little take there.
With that said, here''s a "Cliff''s Notes" for staying near Tolkowsky/ideal angles with GIA reports (their numbers are rounded): A crown angle of 34.0, 34.5 or 35.0 is usually safe with a 40.8 pavilion angle. If pavilion angle = 40.6 lean toward a 34.5-35.0 crown. If pavilion angle = 41 lean toward a 34.0-34.5 crown.

GIA "EX" in cut is great at its heart, but it ranges a bit wider than some people prefer, particularly in deep combinations (pavilion > 41 with crown > 35).

If it''s the I you''re worried about, no; I wouldn''t worry about that. In fact, you can do a search here and find magnificent I diamonds. I''m sure of it! Good luck.

First, I wish I was in those shoes

. To answer your question, though--I would go for the best performing stone that I could afford in the shape and style I loved (Personally, I would sacrifice size for the look I liked, others would choose differently and neither is the wrong way to approach it). If there was any thought that what I could afford right now would not get to the "ideal" size, then the vendor''s upgrade policy would come into play.

For the other questions, I have no clue what GOG''s signature cushions are priced at, you''ll just have to ask. The other thing is that Jon is evidently willing to source rough to have one of these cut specifically for a customer''s desires--a couple of other PS members are going this route. It would take longer, but you would get what you wanted.

If you decide you do want a round, they are out there in your size and price range, though not very frequently. Here is one from James Allen.
