Hello,

This seems like a great group and resource, so I was hoping to find some pointers on where I should start to find an engagement ring.

I know my girlfriend is most fond of emerald cut diamonds. Platinum ring. More "antinque"-looking designs (with etching, etc - not just plain metal).

I''m pretty naieve when it comes to real in depth knowledge and understanding of diamond quality, but have read a bit on this forum and other resources, so have a decent idea. I would like to find a diamond that is 1+ carat and of the highest quality.

I did take a look at the Blue Nile site, but would like to know of other options that are good, either online or brick and mortar (would be willing to travel in the states). Especially source to look at a variety of rings, as the diamond side appears to be more of a standard thing.

Thanks,

Jason

Try this chart to make sure you are getting a well proportioned stone. This will act as a guide.

Never skimp on cut and try to get the best cut diamond you can. Also with fancies, it is best to try to use your eyes to decide what is beautiful, try to get some pics of the diamond before you commit - many vendors will send you a picture which will give you an idea and have a good return policy.

Lastly, if you find one you love which has not so great on paper proportions and you love it, don't discount it. Sometimes in fancy cuts numbers don't tell it all!

Vendors, try Good Old Gold, Wink Jones, Pearlmans, James Allen, Whiteflash. These are great vendors. Also step cuts can show more inclusions and colour than rounds, so you might want to take that into consideration.

Thanks for the replies.

I am in Sacramento - Northern CA area.

I''m definitely of the mindset of getting the highest quality diamond I can afford, with size being secondary.

Thanks for the list of vendors - I will definitely check them out.

Love the avatar, Lorelei.
