I inherited a half carat diamond with a chip in it rom my grandmother. I spoke with a jeweler yesterday who said that if I hit the diamond on something the whole thing may shatter at some point. I would like to get the diamond reset as past settings have placed the chipped area under a prong and it has not shattered thus far. Does anyone have any advice for resetting this diamond? Is it worth resetting? Will a prong provide protection to the area? Would the number of prongs, 4 or 6, matter?

Also, if able to reset, I would like to do a basket setting. Would this type of mounting be okay with a chipped diamond?

Thanks for any help!

We need to see the diamond to know enough to make a meaningful comment. Putting a chip under a prong hides the chip sometimes, but really prevents nothing. A chipped diamond has a greater potential to chip further, but no one knows when it might happen.

If it can be repaired for a fair cost, it might be best, but a diamond subjected to repair cutting also might break during the repair process. No one accepts responsibility for such accidental damage, so you will have to take a chance and be lucky. In repairing hiundrdes of diamonds over the years, I can remember only two which suffered a problem. Thankfully, these belonged to me, so no one was angry about it.

4 or 6 prongs make no difference.

I suggest you make it into a pendant, so that it will likely never hit anything hard enough to chip more.
