I''d like to make this thread a work in progress to help keep my thoughts straight and also so I can let me future fiancee read through the progression :)

This is the diamond I have on hold and should be paid for this afternoon (Jan 28th-09):
Lab Cert: AGS. Cut: Round - H&A Carat: 1.215 Color: F Clarity: SI1
Dimension: 6.84 6.89 4.21 Polish: Ideal Symmetry: Ideal

I chose to go with BrianGavinDiamonds.com - I can''t say enough about how informative and helpful Lesley has been!![/b]

I have a pretty good idea of what the future Mrs. will want. I have the blessing and input of her best friend since childhood that she will be thrilled with whatever I get her. She is traditional in the fact that she would be ecstatic with being presented a symbol of my love for her. We are both certain that she would be indifferent to having involvement in the design.

Here is where I need the help.
I have a fairly good idea of what I would like to present her with. Unfortunately, the idea is split up amongst multiple rings. Of the multiple rings, there is one missing factor, the "head" or "cradle" (what holds the diamond).
I feel I have an excellent diamond and I don''t want to have it all covered up with prongs or designs.

Is there somewhere I would be able to look at just the head/cradle portion of the ring and see it from multiple angles?

All advice, information and comments are welcomed!!

I''m a little confused. Do you have links to the settings you are considering? some setting lend themselves to a more open view of the diamond but unless you go with a tension ring you''re still going to need prongs or bezel. I wouldn''t recommend a tension setting at all unless you are 100% sure you gal wants one. You''ve got a fantastic diamond by the way.

Congrats! I was eying that one as well, it''s beautiful!

For the setting its a delicate balance...the more fragile and "dainty" you try to get the prong the less secure your diamond will be. There are certain designers that find a good balance of security and minimizing metal - best thing to do is just go look at them in person. Or another option would be to get a customer designed ring and work with somebody to create prongs that minimize the amount of metal.

good luck and congrats again!

Sorry -
I don''t have links to the setting I''m looking at yet. I want to find a site that I can review options for heads.
I would agree, I don''t think I''ll be going with a tension setting.
I''m interested in prongs (I''m not sure how many yet)
I find the ''bezels'' hide a lot of the diamond. But, I don''t know if I''ve given them a fair shot because I can''t find a site that gives me a good view of how the diamond is set.

Thanks for the compliment on the diamond. I''m sure she''s going to

Thanks! (I''m glad I beat you to it ;P)

You hit the nail on the head for what I''m looking for. I''m trying to find that balance between security and minimal metal.
I intended to work out something custom but I''m trying to find an example or rough template to start from.

It seems all the sites I look at have static images and only show odd angles of the head. I was hoping to find a site that let me see all 4 sides and a top view.
I might be asking for too much.

That is a pretty big diamond; there''s no way it''ll be obscured by a simple 4- or 6-prong head. If you want to have a clear view of the profile of the diamond as well you might consider something like the Sholdt Fremont? It''s tough to suggest a setting without knowing what elements you like of the settings you''ve already looked at.

I see what yo are saying... I like the setting you pointed out!

Here is something I like but I can't see the head on it very well and it seems to obstruct the diamond

PS: What is the syntax to make links like you did for Sholdt Fremont?

When you pull up the form to post, the sixth icon from the right is a link button (it looks like three links of a chain). Click it and you can insert the URL and give it a name if you wish.
