Forum, I got my SO engagement ring this week and the setting is 18K white gold........Out of curiosity I e-mailed Jenn at JA (really great gal) to see if my rings prongs were platinum. She replied no,,,the prongs on mine are white gold. Not her fault at all cuz I vener discussed this because I thought the industry standard was platinum......should I be concerned??????? did i get hosed?
PS the ring is on fire and clear as heck! Pricescope RULES!

No, you didn''t get hosed. Platinum prongs are more durable, but wg prongs are also very common. If you wanted platinum, you would have had to ask for it and pay more. JA has a return policy, if this is what you want maybe you can exchange you ring.

Without asking, I don''t believe it is the vendor''s fault. But I would want platinum prongs...

I had wg prongs for several years without problems. I think it is more common if you have a YG ring to have plat (or WG) prongs. I have not heard of plat prongs with a WG ring although I can''t see any reason not to do it, if you want to.

From my understanding, under impact, WG would be more likely to break whereas plat would bend. And I''m sure you know how they wear differently.

Thanks for the advice.....I guess I''m go to go with the white gold prongs.......
Hate to be a broken record but the diamond is GREAT and everyone who has seem it thinks I spent 2 to 2.5 times more than what I did......:)

Are you going to show us the ring?

This is what my Jeweler said
"4 or 6-prong 14KWG head: $174
4 or 6-prong Palladium head: $200 (what we set all of our diamonds in at no charge to our clients, this is what we always recommend- palladium is part of the platinum family so it has the security of platinum for a price comparable to white gold)
4-prong Platinum head: $308
6-prong Platinum head: $348"

Is Palladium legit?

Thanks,
Roy

The prices of settings ( prong section) varies a lot by the size and the metal.

The actual prices of the 14k settings generally cost a lot less than $ 174.00. I think the price you quoted includes the labor to solder it to the shank, and for setting the stone, unless you referring to a rather large stone ( over 1.50 carats).

Platinum settings are expensive. Probably 3 x 5 time the price of gold ones. The material costs a lot more ( double ) and it is heavier than gold ( 2-3 x ) so that is why the difference, plus labor when working with platinum is a lot more intensive. The required temperature to solder it is much higher than that of gold. It is so high, that diamonds should not be in the item when soldering it, or very special precautions taken to avoid burning the diamonds. Colored stones are pretty much an absolute "no-no" when soldering a piece that has platinum.

Those prices were for a .82rd with labor and setting the stone.
So is Palladium legit? This Jeweler is kind of deceptive but they are the only ones with the setting my girlfriend likes.

Sorry for the thread hijack,
Roy

My original e-ring had white gold prongs and only once in 30 years did a prong get bent when I caught it on something. The stone did not fal out and it was easily fixed. The main thing with any ring is to not wear it while doing tasks that will cause unusual wear. She shouldn''t sleep in it either. Rubbing against fabric will cause wear on the prong tips.

Congratulations on getting a great diamond and ring!
